I'm having a strange experience on my boomkin.
In vanilla I was level-capped on a rogue
In BC, I was level capped on hunter and a rogue (and tank+healer, but this post is about dps)
And now I'm level capped on ret paladin and a Boomkin - well he's 77 but now joining some level-80 or close to it instances.
People seem to be happy to get a boomkin into a party/raid (I was in TK raid, where I said I could go tree, but they told me to stay boomkin). On few occasions before starting instance, there were comments that they are happy to have one. I've never experienced that.
Is this normal? or is it dumb luck that I'm getting into groups who seem to want a boomkin?

13% Spell Damage
3% Spell Hit Debuff
3% Haste Buff
5% Spell Crit Buff
That's why people like Boomkins. They offer awesome raid buffs to casters.
Edit: Forgot the base
Faerie Fire
too.

In order to replace the full set of buffs which a moonkin brings, you would have to bring all of the following...
Shadow Priest
Ret Pally
Elemental Shaman
A Druid of Any Spec
Either a Warlock or Unholy DK
In a 5 man party or 10 man raid, it's virtually impossible to not get any benefit from having a moonkin around.

We have a somewhat unusual skin and the best dance in the game too.
I do have the same phenomenon with some of the paladins in my guild. Whenever i'm specced resto, they all moan about missing my crit aura despite the fact that there are 2-3 elemental shamans in the raid. I can tell them however much i want that shamans bring the same 5% aura (littles less practical but whatever), they still don't seem to get it.

I think you made a typo there. You probably meant to say "We have a totally ugly skin and the bear dance is way more awesome then ours."
Well, Moonkin dance is the 2nd best in the game ;)
I also like having on in any group but I prefer going tree or feral just to avoid having that fat ugly furry bird on my screen all the time.

5 years ago, i became a druid and moonkin because of the same skinned mob. I've stayed druid and moonkin because it's an interesting class, but moonkin has always been and will always be my form of choice.

Well, i do remember a hunter 15-man UBRS run video at level 60. Was really lol worthy, but yeah, not really something that anyone but a hybrid class with all roles available can do on most raids.

Moonkins were definitely useless in Vanilla (and i do know, i still played that spec). I was basically dps'ing on MC trash and the easy bosses (Magmadar, ...) and healing on things that were a bit harder for us. Main problem was mana when dps'ing, i was generally out of mana while the boss still had half his life left.
The further we went the more i had to heal

I must say, from a tankadin PoV, i like boomkins in my groups, as long as they don't use the freakin'
typhoon
when i lay down my
consecrate
. Otherwise im happy happy.

indeed
i did couple of instances with boomkins and:
1. if i heal - i don't care, i just heal
2. if i tank - i really hate when they use
typhoon
- i lose melee distance with mob and then i lose rage and aggro.
Boomkins that want to use
Typhoon
in groups really should
glyph
it to take away the knockback .
Aaaaahaaaaa.... Sweesus, its that easy? WTH was that idiot druid doing then? Sorry, but is there any "Huntard" equivivalent for druids? Because he/she was one.

The knock back itself is still a useful thing to have in a raiding build. But, that does not excuse misuse of the spell just for extra damage. And some boomers don't want to get rid of it because of it's applications in PvP.
