I feel your pain, literally. I ran a couple heroics yesterday with an undergeared tank (mostly crafted items) and asked him if he wanted me to trap to make the run a little smoother and put less strain on the healer. He said yes, so began my adventure.
I first realized to not fire Freezing Arrow at the mob but more like 15 yards in front of it as the mob will just run right over it and not trigger it.
Secondly, our traps don't last for carp. 20 seconds is insanely short compared to Sap & Sheep.
Third, 60 second cooldown....LOLWTF...enough said. When Sheep is spammable we get screwed if our trap breaks early or by accident.

Big problem with traps is AOE damaging. I hardly use traps while running heroics because tanks tend to just "go and aggro the whole room". Freezing arrow + Misdirection IS good and IS useful. But whenever I use this combo, the tank or any other DPS with AoE spells will rain over the mobs, trapped mob included... ruining the trap usefulness.
WOTLK PvE is mostly tank'n'spank with pure DPS, no need to trap. I saw sheeps and SAP's just once or twice since wotlk came live. Plus, few people run NORMAL instances because we can easily get good boe epic gear from AH, really helping every class as soon as you ding 80.

60 second cooldown? Since when?
Or is this a PvP-mode thing that Blizzard somehow saw necessary while leaving in spam-able sheep and fears?
I guess Chain Trapping is a lost art since Wrath...
Even without talents, it's not all that hard to keep a target trapped indefinitely via Kiting, and maybe concussive shot and scatter shot if trained for it.
Of course, that does take good practice to get the mechanic down flawlessly, which seems to have been lost in the Wrath AoE spam.
The advantage of hunter traps is that they're useful on anything that isn't specifically immune.
Sap, sheep and hex are only useful on a few types, so we can sometimes trap things like Slimes or Undead when they can't
/agrees and, to be honest, thinks this is /thread
it seems to me many hunters didnt know how to chain and multi trap, and then they seem to think that because they are sv now they must be good at it. as if it was a talent to spec into and magically you can trap like a pro.
Heck, in some pug naxx/ulduar runs i've got people wyvern stinging and then wondering why the follow up trap is always broken.
Well, I never use traps. Why? Because I can't.
I'm survival and we got this awesome new and improved usability out of our traps! Yeah they improved it so much that they gave us this new awesome skill that shares a CD with traps. So you get to choose whether you want to DPS or CC. FailBlizzard
Also. You can't dps if everyone is dead. cc>dps in many cases.
i wonder if they changed the double trap fix a while back. i found it fun to cc 3 mobs in a 5 man...
