Hi guys,
So, I'm leveling a priest and... OMG! It's sooooo boring... (not lvl 50 yet)
Well, until yesterday my motivation for continue leveling the priest was that Disc Priest really makes diference in arenas. But I've heard that in 3.1 this is not true anymore... Seems that now Disc have lots of mana issues and the shield was nerfed...
So, I'm looking for motivation to continue it, otherwise, probably go as mage... dunno yet...
The information I told is true? Disc are doing well in arenas? Can someone pla indicates a good pvp video from 3.1? Maybe it helps =p
Thx all!

I am in the same boat as you (well i am more interested in the pve healing part of disc priests).
I am leveling my priest that is now 45 and the only way i seem to bare leveling him is either instance or get boosted.
After 3.1 priests seem more like mages without the ability to summon water even when i switched to a disc spec with spirit tap and meditation.
Also interested in the pvp aspect of disc priests.

I really wouldn't roll Priest because they got a buff, its the Flavour of the month. Just wait until you get it to 80 it has probably been nerfed or something...

My experience:
Yep, priests are not easy to level up. Priests were never meant to be good at soloing before the level cap. As you level up, howevrer (and get to level 50 and respec Shadow, particularly), you'll find yourself running levels much faster. levels 40 to 60 are from my experience the most boring thing there is. However, a good priest is granted to have a group for nearly everything.
There are even things that only priests can do, and a raid without priests cannot (Razzuvius 25man Mind Controllings, ofc). Your buffs and extremely smooth healing output are really nice. In pvp, things WILL be very hard in the beginning. Before you reach or pass the mark of 800 resilience, any pve-geared DPS that is not a totally retarded player you find is game over instantly. If you, however, endure the first troublesome times, priests can nearly be "pvp tanks", with so many defensive tools.
Priests are hard to master. When you do so, you'll have so much fun you will never want a different thing! :)

I personally found the 30's gruesome. Once i got shadowform, i had a ton of fun. Play around with Mind control while you level, it makes for lots of giggles.
My moment of epic awesome in the 40-60 range was when i was healing Sunken Temple as shadow (like i did all my instances prior to 60). We accidentally pulled about 4 packs of dragons in the inner circle, and lived to tell the tale. Everyone was so impressed with my healing, i just
had
to hop into shadowform to show how much more awesome I was.
As far as pvp goes, I can at least live through rogue stuns (unlike my warlock, haha).
I love my priest. She rocks.

Even if Priests are FotM, they are still harder to play than, say, Death Knights. You've got to keep track of numerous things, including:
- Your health
- Party's health
- Party Pet's health (including Shadowfiend, and especially Warlock pets)
- Your mana
- Enemy team's mana (especially their healers)
- CCs
- Using your judgement on whether to heal, dispel, DoT, pop a cooldown, go offensive, kite them, etc.
A majority of your survivability comes from shielding and being able to rely on instant casts before having to finally Penance and Flash Heal yourself, leaving you vulnerable to an interrupt or school lock. You can attempt fake casting, but this is a difficult and risky maneuver, although the payoff is really awesome as it allows anywhere from 8 seconds to 2 minutes of worry-free casting.
Managing your cooldowns is extremely important as well. Power Infusion has a short cooldown, but you've still got to use it just right. Pain Suppression is a rather long cooldown, but you may be safe in using it early against drain and endurance teams who won't be able to cause significant burst. Watching your Psychic Scream CD is perhaps the most important. It's your only defensive tool when your Holy/Disc school is locked. It's also your only CC, and will really only buy you a couple of seconds in early game against Forsaken players with decent reflex times. Watching Penance, ProM, and Weakened Soul CDs are also key to being able to make judgements and keep yourself alive. You also gotta know when to use once-per-game CDs extremely well (which would be Divine Hymn, Hymn of Hope, and Shadowfiend.)
Basically, as a Priest, you gotta learn to be offensive, defensive, and disruptive.

Well... that is not entirely true. Mind Control also exists. Yup, its not very reliable and has a very prohibitive cast time, as well as making you unable to use any abilities, but it can sometimes be very nice. In a 2v2 match, for example, if you check your partner's easy to defeat class, you get essentially a 1v1 situation that could greatly benefit you.
(Example: I run with a priest/warrior team, and if we are facing Warlock/Healer team, i attempt to cast mind control on the healer. If it gets interrupted? Great, i'm free to heal. If it gets trinketed? Great, a coolodwn of my enemy wasted. If it gets WotFed? Yey, i can use Fear with no fear of that ugly racial. They allow my cast to go off? Even better, my warrior can usually make the warlock bleed to his death. Particularly useful if i pre-shield my warrior to stop damage, giving him a free way to do damage long enough to make his healer panic and blow all cooldowns, or kill the warlock itself.
Oh... and mind control out of arenas is one of your funniest spells. Eye of the Storm and Arathi Basin Lumber Mill come to mind! Throw people off cliffs and watch them die! (AND be annoying enough to make them take durability damage, for this death is not a pvp-death, thus causing armor damage!)

Ah yes, Mind Control. A very fun spell to use with PI, Engineering Gloves, or Trinket Use.'
It's a bit hard to use against Undead Warriors though.

"Blizzard dont do that bad a job really with class balance, all healers are good, they are just different, but a lot of people paint a biased and often uninformed picture of things."
Season 5 is perhaps the worst Blizzard has done in terms of class balance. DKs definitely were overpowered. Combine that with the fact that the metagame was new, and behold, you've got DK + Pally.
Things have calmed a bit though. And Priests
are
generally the best healers for 2v2 for the reasons you've mentioned. Survivability, offensive and defensive dispels, mana burns, burst damage, they've got a lot.

No offense taken.
It's just that, statistically, it was pretty dumb for Season 5. Certainly, DKs and Paladins had the largest amount of Gladiators and Deadly Gladiators. Warriors had... I think 2 Deadly Gladiators?
These days though, the combo variety is MUCH better. I'm talking about Double Priest teams that are reaching over 2000, double Warriors, Warriors even competing with and sometimes outdoing DKs in 2v2s (Warrior + Druid is making a comeback, like S4.) Priest + Rogue has been nerfed a bit, so they aren't as dominant anymore.
Still, I loved opening Season 1 the best. Even if Warrior + Paladin was "undefeatable," we still had 0cd ProM. That was sweet.
On topic: Level a Priest. They work with any class, even other Priests. lol
