Depends on what your goals are.
Mages have very powerful CC, so they can team with MOST classes. Mage/ret, mage/mage, mage/rogue, mage/priest, mage/boomkin, mage/ele are all comps I've seen. I personally play mage/enhance.
Mage/ret is still competitive (from what I've heard). But if you're looking for glad... Better find a rogue :P

Frost mages are OP right now. They are so hard to kill it's just dumb. Frost mage/ret pally is one of the very few comps that can consistantly beat mine(Haunt warlock/feral druid). They just have too many oshi buttons. The mage and pally both being able to remove all DoT's the warlock puts up drastically reduces his DPS and survivability. Lets not forget how much damage a frost mage can absorb thru his ice barrier and mana shield.

There is so mmuch wrong here....
1) It might be hard to catch a frost mage, yes. But once caught, lol. Mages take a ridiculous amount of damage if they don't have a way to completely escape it altogether.
2) Mages have exactly -one- "oshi" shutton. Everything else is completely class mechanics and we'd die in 5 seconds without (Blink? Ice Barrier? Frost nova? The class would instantly fail now and forever in PvP with the removal or even nerf of any of these)
3) Decurse does NOT equal 100% of your warlocks damage. He could be used Mage Armor to help against the warlock, but if he's doing that, it blows my mind you're not just straight wrecking him.
4) My two shields together do absorb a hefty amount of damage (I believe it's 5k BEFORE the SP bonus to the shields is calculated. Probably higher, since I'm glyphed for it.) But you know what? The mana cost is well over 3k for both shields. That means, assuming I do absolutely nothing else besides stand there, I can use both shields 5 times.
Mages are, IMO, polymorph bots. We have CC and good escape mechanics. Our damage is average at very best, we have no damage mitigation and no particularly useful buffs to give our team in arena.
We are, also, walking vending machines. Woo.

We have retarded damage about once every 2.4 minutes if we time it perfectly.
Nothing a ret paladin can't do everytime he reaches a clothie and manages to keep them there.

I've never really seen a mage + healer combo succeed well, so i won't comment on that. Usually if there's a mage, its a dual dps group
Rogue partner is still your best bet. He offers great control, and the ability to pressure healers with a MS effect, and has an easy reset button if things go bad against a dps/heals team. Its more versatile in that it can handle a larger variety of comps then say........ mage/ret can due to its better CC control. If mage/ret doesnt kill 1 instantly, the ret doesn't have a good way to reset and is also prone to kiting, which the rogue will not be due to poisons.
