Note: I am posting this here first but will be posting this shortly on the WoW forums as Croquet of Sen'jin. I wasn't sure if this would be something that WoWHead would be interested in tackling and I didn't know how often they read the cesspool that is the wow General Forums. If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them here. I'll probably poke into the Gen forums one but lord knows those threads devolve quickly.
So I came up with this idea a few months back, started working on it, realized I'm super lazy and so now am instead just going to write up these specs for all to use. I think it's a decent idea. Yes it's TLDR material. But hopefully somebody will think it a good idea and implement it (I'm looking at you large sites!). Yes the idea is obvious... it's one of those "It's so simple why isn't it out there?" ideas. Maybe it is I guess.... I haven't seen it though. I'm prepared to take the forum brunt in showing me the 18 other sites that already do this...
Problem
Once you leave the official World of Warcraft site, there is really no good method for telling who is who on the internet. Anybody can claim to be any character.
Why do I care who you are?
If I know who you are for sure, I may be able to make enhanced sites where you can:
How to
A user creates an account on your website (standard e-mail/password/username, whatever). They then input their character/server names. For each character a unique armory configuration is given. For instance I will input "Croquet - Sen'jin". The website will tell me, "If you are Croquet, remove your gloves, cloak, and belt." I then login to the game, remove those 3 items, and log out. I wait 30 mins - 1 hour for the armory to update (or go to bed and wait till morning). Once the armory reflects this I then go back to the site and say "Okay done!". It queries the armory and confirms this. The site now knows that my user on that site is actually that character(s). I can then log back into the game and reequip my gear.
That's it. It's seriously simple. I would recommend using Tabards, shirts, or possibly offhand/ranged items.
Extra
Let's say player A and player B both claim to be Croquet. You would give player A one configuration of nakedness and player B a different one. There are numerous enough combinations that you should be able to give unique sets to each user of your site.
By doing this you can then know on your site, who the actual GM is. The GM may be able to set permissions for the lower ranked people in their guild for functionality on your site. Maybe your site offers news feeds for guilds. The guild master could allow only the top two ranks to post information into the news feed.
PHPBB integration
Ideally this would also have a service which would allow PHPBB integration. It would work like this:
The guild master logs into your site and once authorized as the GM gets a "guild key" (RSA hash is fine). They would put this key into a plugin on their PHPBB site. Then a member of the guild registers on your site, validates themself and gets a character key (possibly good for only 24 hours, maybe even has the PHPBB sites URL as part of the hash to limit its usage to the target site). They then place their key into the PHPBB site. The PHPBB site sends both the guild key and character key to your server. Your server responds with either "Yes this character key is for a member of your guild" or "No they are not". If they are a member of your guild it could automatically, based on their in guild rank, give them access to various sections of the board. The administrator does not need to manage guild permissions on the PHPBB site anymore.
The End
It's probably too long for most of you but hopefully I was clear enough for those with the ability and willpower to do this. I think it's a fairly good idea that will work. If you do use the idea maybe you could give a little credit to Croquet somewhere?
Thanks for your time forumers!

has validation like this. It has you buy two specified low level clothing items from a vendor and equip them.
Though I am a little confused on exactly what you want Wowhead to do with such a thing? Possibly for the upcoming character profiler? Or are you looking for Wowhead to supply an api for 3rd party sites to use?

Nothing particularly for wowhead to do with this. I know you guys are working on various things on your site and if you were ever expanding to do character profiles this might help in that regard.
I hadn't heard of the ZarkMark site though... guess it's already being done. Ah well.
