HOW do people manage to have below 2k DPS?

This has become increasingly frustrating for me. I hit 80 on my hunter almost to the day of 3.1. I had been Beast Mastery from level 10-80, so was a little anxious about the switch. I read up on specs and rotations while the server was down, and began my career in heroics that night. I was doing between 1.5k and 2k dps from the start, with quest gear and a few crafted pieces I had picked up for cheap.
I did 10 Naxx last week, and I just started raiding heavily this week, and did all of them that I could except 10 and 25 Uld. 25 Naxx was the last one I did, and I did 4k dps on Patchwerk. I know it's nothing special, but for having almost no raid gear, I was keeping up with people in full T8. That shouldn't be happening.

I am not a DPS caster, but wasn't this changed over a year ago? Didn't Bliz move the GCD timer to client side and add a pre-cast feature to remove the need for cast timers? I do know that a cast-timer mod would help a person with average latency, increase their DPS by 10-20%, throught the use of client side timers and stop-cast macros, but I believe that is now built into WOW.
Then again, I am not up to date on caster DPS...
The only thing they changed was the need for /stopcasting macros for all of your spells. You still need something to track the latency on your casts.
You can't build into the game the ability to say the cast begain .1 - .5 seconds before the player even pushed the key. Well, I guess you can, but it's a lot of guess work and hoop jumping.
Regardless, the client will accept new casts and wait for the server to say whether the cast was allowed or not (presuming you're not cutting into the GCD, which may be the case with high haste/short cast time spells), and the client will allow the cast when the server comes back saying the previous spell fired. Previously, the client would automatically deny a new spellcast if it had not been told it completed yet, which is why /stopcasting was used.

HOW do people manage to have below 2k DPS?
Some people are just exceptionally skilled at failing.

I'd be somewhat surprised to see fresh 80's pulling 2k+ dps in heroics, to be honest. Even assumming you have a reasonably decent set of quested blues, maybe a few instance drops, that would be a pretty high benchmark to be aiming at for a mere heroic. Also depends a lot on the instance and the class involved. Any mage that sits there and does nothing but spam blizzard on every single pull will probably manage 2k dps, but I bet their boss dps is going to be poor.
Most people are running heroics to actually get gear, remember. Now if you're talking about that 10 man geared <insert class> who can't pull 2k dps, then I agree totally. But if we're talking fresh or relatively fresh 80's in mostly quested stuff, then I can't see where you're coming from. 2k is a very high benchmark to aim for in a 5 man for such a player.
^This.
I just hit 80 very recently. I'm in quest and non-heroic blues with 1 or 2 enchants. My weapons are ~lvl 70 with NO enchants to increase DPS. I'm nowhere near the hit cap. Cookie cutter combat rogue spec with standard rotation. Ran plague quarter of Naxx10 and did ~1600 DPS (~2k for Loatheb). Overall DPS would've been higher if not for that damn "dance" during Heigan (took me a while to figure out when I can blow my CD's and as a result I wasted a ton of my AR and SnD while trying not to f'n die :P)
Even still, the people with me were actually impressed I was able to do as much in my gear, being a fresh 80 and all. I think with some more experience and a few enchants I can pull closer to 2k OVERALL, but it's still a very high benchmark to expect for a fresh 80.
Now, like Shirash said, a geared-to-the-teeth player that can't pull 3k dps, let alone 2k dps, should just quit now or isn't taking it seriously. Either way, a /kick is probably in store for those people if it continues.

This is what I don't get:-.
As a prot paladin wearing Naxx gear, I pull, on average, probably 1500 dps when i'm tanking. Maybe a hair more if I'm going full-out with Exorcism, Consecrate on every cooldown, etc. Proabably... oh, 80% of the time I'm tanking a heroic I'm #2 or #3 on the dps list.
Yes, that's bad, I can beat those numbers on my quest blue lock,
but
how come I've seen DK tanks, not Naxx geared, topping this? I thought classes were meant to be equal and now we bring the player? Ofc, we all know that's poop. For example, my lock isn't exactly what you'd call gear dependant, unlike a fury warrior, so:-
I'd have to say as far as the DK's go that they'll do more dps than a prot pally (i know you were poking fun, but some people might now and jump on the "pally sux" bandwagon) because of two main factors:
DK's generate threat less by mitigation/avoidance/reflection and more by building hate through creative pain dispersion. They hit harder (2h weapons, don't ya know) and that's how they build threat.
That being said, 1500dps during a heroic (I break 2k pretty easily in Naxx+) for a pally
tank
, even given the level changes since BC, is a pretty significant upgrade from the days of olde.
Also, I completely agree that for those of us that have the patience, if it looks like a knowledge issue, take 5 minutes and show some of these folks the ropes. It's easy to forget how frustrated and drowned we felt in new info when we hit max level the first time.
"What do you mean my levelling spec isn't good for heroics?" :)

Just reading this makes me want to subscribe to your blog or something. Creative pain dispersion :D

You're kidding, right? If you're doing 400, that is sad. Because a level 53 Shaman is competing with you DPS wise.
Oh come on, look at his gear. He would do more than 400 with just auto attacks. He is prolly just trying to say that the OP /flex-es far too much, or something along those lines.
Also i lol'd when i saw a +1 to all stats enchant on a Naxx 25 chest.
