I have a few questions to this...
One: what the #$%^ were you doing in Shatt? It's all about Dalaran.
Two: If you had 4k+ gold why wouldn't you look into a better BoE epic like
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40305
, because with that much money you can afford that.
Three: Your first time ever buying something from a random person, really? I find that hard to believe.
Honestly, in real life I'm a good person, but I'd keep that much gold if I was in your place, and if I was on the opposite end, I wouldn't expect the guy to return my gold back.

One time I was approached by a naked level 70 warrior who opened trade with me without warning, and threw up probably 100 arcane dust, 50 large prismatic shards, and 50 GPEs (the big BC enchanting mats), as well as some other valuable stuff.
The only thing he whispered me was "200g". It was rather obvious this person's account had been hacked. They disenchanted/sold all their gear, and were quite obviously clearing out the account. After a little debate with myself, I decided to just go for it. I was a fresh 70 at the time, and the idea of getting 2000g worth of stuff for nothing was really too great to pass up. Besides, if I didn't accept, he'd just go on to another player, and they sure as hell would take the offer.
However, just because I reasoned it was no problem to accept the 'dirty' materials, doesn't mean I thought it was right. I immediately opened a ticket and reported the character name, telling the GM that I assume it was hacked and perhaps they should look at any suspicious activity that took place regarding the account. I was told that until the actual account owner made a claim, there was nothing they could do, and thanked me for trying to help out.
Regarding the original question, yes I'd give it back without question. I'm very liberal with my gold, at least when it comes to myself and people who are close to me. My girlfriend probably 'owes' me at least 10,000g, as I have paid for a lot of her epic flier, several rare pets off the AH, and most recently, I paid 6000 gold or so to make her the Nobles deck (even after I reasoned that it was too little a DPS increase for my rogue to be worth buying for MYSELF). I don't expect, or even WANT any of the money back, it makes me happy to do nice things, and get her stuff she can't readily buy herself. The same would apply to a stranger. I'd rather have them feel the relief of getting back their money back than get such a pithy 'high'.

I'd never buy something from anybody I didn't know who was advertising something in Trade to begin with.
If they want to sell something, they should put it in the auction house.

You say you believe in karma, but do you really? Karma affects what happens to "us" in the next life. It has nothing to do with good/bad things happening to good/bad people.

Even if it was 42000 gold, i would still give it back, there is nothing worse than a thief. and let alone one that stoops that low, and in a virtual world!
Bad luck on losing the gold.
