The basic intention is that it can be used when you're about to take significant damage from a large attack. So a pokemon uses Solar Beam, and you can see it charge up. If you can't kill it in your next attack and would otherwise die because it was super effective, you can substitute and survive for another attack. It costs 25% of your health, and can theoretically absorb anything that would kill you.
I don't know enough about the competitive scene to describe other strategies using it though.

Some other ideas behind using Substitute is to dodge statuses or predict when your opponent will use a non-offensive move, allowing you to set up, Baton Pass, etc, etc.
It's also good for PP stalling.

Hm. Yeah those sound like valid uses.
I didn't know PP stalling was a thing, though. It sounds extremely unreliable, given how the most popular moves have 16 or 24PP. The 8PP moves are kinda rare. (and I do hope nobody runs competetive without PP-maxing all the moves on every pokemon).
I just bred an Adamant Ralts with Synchronize -> Most useful pokemon for catching physical sweepers. Already managed to get a bunch of good adamant pokemon with him. Good thing the Ralts is also male, and appears to have decent IVs in Attack, so I will probably make him into a Gallade.
Now I need a pokemon with Modest and Synchronize, for more easy natures.

Scored a Greninja with Protean.
Time to breed that sucker...

Froakies and their evolutions with Protean are stupidly common in Wonder Trade. I've gotten quite a few of them.
...So many I've actually had to release those with poor IVs (I already do this anyways, but...)

Well there will certainly be one because Zygarde. I'd probably give it 1.5 years.

Woo, so I have beaten the Elite Four for the first time. My victory team consisted of:
lv 81 Blaziken
lv 78 Greninja
lv 69 Pidgeot
lv 62 Lucario
lv 58 Blastoise
lv 44 Machoke (who was really just a HM Strength slave that I kept in the party because I didn't really have a strong sixth)
Needless to say Blaziken and Greninja carried the rest of the team through the bulk of the fights. Mega Lucario had a fun time soloing the Dragon trainer though (used a few Calm Minds as a setup and then just spammed Dragon Pulse). The biggest problem for me was the water trainer's Gyarados, because I just didn't have the firepower to put him down fast (no electric moves anywhere), and he managed to use a ridiculous amount of Dragon Dances, so his Speed and Attack were through the goddamned roof. I was actually just using revive back and forth between Blastoise and Greninja, to make him waste all the PP on his Earthquake. After he was out of Earthquake, he started using Waterfall, which Greninja could stand through despite his ridiculously buffed attack. I was really desperate at that point, because the water trainer was the last I fought, and I didn't want to re-battle them all over. Good thing that I always spend all the money that I earned in the game on healing items before entering the League.
By the way, all of the pokemons had terrible natures and randomly scattered EV's. I am working on a few higher tier pokemon (with proper EV allocation, and good natures, not yet perfect IVs) already though.
Interest, if you were curious, the pokemon in your Safari are:
Krabby (pretty good if you ask me)
Floatzel (kinda meh)
Azu-fricking-marill. You said your safari was mediocre? Do you know how much face can Azumarill crush in the OU tier? Huge Power and the new Fairy type make him a ridiculous physical sweeper. I am so much looking forward to catching an Adamant one with perfect attack IV's and Huge Power.
So... would you mind checking out what Pokemon are in my safari, now that I have beaten the E4?
Also, I would really like to add some more friends. Anyone still playing Pokemon X/Y here? Come on guys.

Yeah I know about that but Water Safaris are stupidly common.

I just found out TM's are infinitely reusable. Mind = blown. One of the best changes they have ever done to the game. I am so happy now.

That's been since Black and White, though.
Great change indeed.

I just found this:

So much useful info. The first thing I'll try to breed up like that is Chandelure.

So the Pokemon Bank was released in Japan. Trading channels are flooded with pokemon from previous generations.
I managed to get a Koffing from wonder trade, who, I noticed, is very much sought after. I bred five copies of the Koffing.
Now I am sitting on Totodile, Mudkip, Piplup, and Chimchar. You can't believe how happy I am.
I can breed you some copies if you wish. But keep spamming me with the hatching power O-power pls.

I haven't gotten much of anything from previous gens. I did get a lot of 4-5 IV Pokemon though...
Considering I have a bunch of legendaries to send up, I can wait a few days.
