When did 'Tip' stop meaning tip?

I don't offer enchants any more because everyone expects to get it for free. It's not a job - it's something we spent our money on, our time on, our effort on. Unlike a restaurant, where the waiter is already paid a wage, and what he gets is a bonus. I used to offer enchanting (at 450 so I don't need skill ups) but people would ask me to travel all over the place and then offer no tip, or a shiny 2g for spending as much time finding them as I could have farmed 20g in easily, and then most of the time don't even say thanks! Now I understand mats are expensive but so is levelling up a skill and buying the recipes, and if someone travels to you they should most definitely be tipped in my opinion.
Not for me anymore... for anyone who is still gaining skill points then I'd say offer your professions but if you're already at max stick to guildies, friends and make a profit on the AH where you can. People are quite happy to buy my enchanting scrolls on that AH so I stick to that now.

As for tipping in WoW, I don't endorse it. You chose to level tradeskill X, I'm not going to bribe you because you made that choice. If it's such a bother for you with all the time and gold you put in leveling your profession then by all means dump it and pick something else, less bothersome, or better yet, cancel your account. If you demand gold for clicking a button and standing still for 3 seconds of your life then you can GTFO, especially if I had to scream in trade channel for 20+ minutes before you responded. I'll ask someone else to provide his services instead.
If everyone had that kind of attitude, then the only people who would ever respond to crafting requests in trade would be the people who wanted to level up their skills. Everyone else would just put their stuff on the AH and make a better profit (for less work). If you needed something that wasn't in high demand, or wanted to get something cheaper than the going price on the AH, you would be out of luck. I'd also be willing to bet that the "fee" people would charge for crafting would be a bit more expensive than the relatively minor tips people expect now.

I love hearing all these people QQ about how hard it is to find a crafter
but in the same damn post
complain about having to pay them when they do find them.
As though the 20 minutes of copy/paste in /trade equals the 3k Gold and 100+ hours it took to lvl and learn the craft they are looking for.
I'm just now getting up to the point where i'd be able to craft high end stuff and i can promise after reading this thread that i'll be making it very clear that i'll be charging for my work.

I agree that how you phrase it matters. Don't say a service is free and then ask for a tip. If you want to be paid for your service, then just say so.
I personally don't charge people if they farmed their own mats. If they wish to give a tip for the time I spent training it is their choice.

As for the tip/fee semantics, who cares? It's a payment. Make the payment and quit QQing.
There is a set of expectations that comes with each, so it's not just empty semantics. Somebody who thinks of tips as mandatory fees is going to have a rather unpleasant transaction if they run into a player who takes "tips" to mean that payment is optional and the amount is left to their discretion.

I've been reading on all these comments about how to tip or pay a fee for crafting... what do you guys think about lockpicking?
I usually make myself available to people with lockboxes and add in the chat that a tip is appreciated... worked so so thus far.
What do you think?
I tend to get far less tips from lockpicking than I do for crafting. I guess people just assume that my lockpicking skill goes up magically as I level up. Worse, since you can't hide the fact that you're a rogue, people will randomly open up trade with me (no matter if I'm at the AH or the mailbox or whatever) and just plop their boxes down without a word. Those people get told to go jump in a lake :P
