Wow lol. The funny thing is the ad for that video was an anti-Romney political ad.
I love chess, it's a stunningly beautiful game. I saw a study recently that drew comparisons between the hours that someone practised and their rating/ranking and I thought it was sort of wonderful that the best chess players in the world have a /played of several years. Yes they're, of course, very intelligent people but the point is that nobody gets to be the best in the world at anything without putting in tens of thousands of hours of practise.
As for polite and equal, I kinda agree with Sinespe that the purpose of most competitive games is to achieve a result that demonstrates an inequality - who wins? - and there have been some wonderfully impolite (or down-right rude) chess players over the years so I'd say that the game itself is as polite as any other. It's not about the game, it's the people/person you're playing it with.
I remember chess...Good ol' chess. It was fun, but seemed like a (semi-boring) time sink (half and hour of time could separate each move or something crazy like that). It was how I spent my time before I got into video games and stuff =P.

asakawa, would you be willing to find a way for off topic wowheaders to play chess against eachother? I'd love to play chess with you.
As for "equal". I don't think the players skill is equal between players. I think that each player is put on an equal field of play at the beginning of each game. When I sit across from the other player, in chess, I view them as my equal, regardless of their skill. If for no other reason, then out of respect for their desire to spend time with me, and meet me on the battlefield of chess itself. I have a great love for the game, and its players.

Sucks that only the Kingdom contest gives out the copper achievement.
And there was the chess thread in the Forum Games.

Something I realised when playing a friend recently is that playing chess is not like riding a bike (possibly a British phrase) - what knowledge I once had is almost all gone now. I find it fascinating but I'd just embarrass myself if I tried to play someone in a real game now. I mostly just content myself with knowing the names of a few classic openings and trotting them out to sound smart ^_^
Chess is certainly an example of a reasonably well balanced game but even it has the problem of playing black or white (by which I mean moving first or second for those that don't play) so a single game isn't balanced in itself.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##asakawa##DELIM##

If in a 'game', you play through twice, once as white and once as black... and keep going back and forth until someone has more wins than the other.
