And while we are nitpicking, I also mentioned terminal velocity.. but if we are talking about speed/acceleration in a vacuum, then there is no terminal velocity... except maybe the speed of lightEven with nothing to hold it back, matter can never reach the speed of light.

If I remember my physics from college, and can put it rather simply....
In theory, an object's relative mass increases exponentially as it approaches the speed of light... thus, the force required to accelerate increases also. Eventually reaching a point where the energy required for further acceleration is infinite.
This is basically it. It's because of the extended version of E=MC2, but this puts it simply enough.
