Well, my work is mostly abstract, and not as good as some other arts I've seen. To each their own.
I usually like the floating island concepts but there's just something about yours (no offence, not trying to degrade it or anything) that just irks me. It has a very 'amateur' feel about it (and once again, not trying to offend you). I liked it better before you added all of the swirls.
I tried to find my image that I made 4 years ago with Photoshop, but sadly, it seems lost :(
Well I kinda am an amateur :P And this stuff isn't made in Photoshop.

He's using Paint.Net. It's a darn good program, I've got a bit of experience with it.

Paint.NET is easy enough for beginners, I've never used GIMP but it sounds more professional than PDN but less so than PS.

They use Photoshop to pump the contrast to the MAXXXXXX! That's about all they use PS for.
