well now, here's an interesting comment from blizz:
Get shards into a place that is more interesting and less of a hassle. We have two models we're considering. One is very cool, but a huge change to gameplay, which might mean it has to wait. The other is more of a quick fix that we'd do until we can implement the very cool model.
if they're looking at something that is "very cool" and a "huge change" then it could be that zharkriesh's ideas may not be so very far from the mark. i thought them unlikely because they would require such a big overhaul of the system but this statement has opened things up a bit.

in Raids its not a problem, in groups its not a problem, in arena its really not a problem.. if you burn trough 20-30 Soul shards (that you should stack up before you start) you can take a 10min break and gather them up again. only situations i find soul shards abit irritating is in BG, i can usually burn up a good deal of soul shards in a bg and in pvp DS really does no good.. i know i can just DS one or two buggers that attack 4 of us solo but it usually does not make up for what you dish out the rest of the BG, secondly its very annoying when your out grinding, and then i usually just have 3 or 4 shards. if someone attack me i can take em with that but then i either gotta run before they ress or start grinding mobs becuse i need Soul shards and then il just get stabbed in the back by the ^&*!t of rogue.
as for what to do with this issue i think we should have a spell that can soul drain "players only" when their dead. and even recive more then one soul shard. (say you used shadow burn for extra burst mid-fight you will get 2 shards, one for his soul and one for the soul you burnt into his face)
maybe this spell is a channel that you cast on the corpse and does not give you a soul until he presses "release soul" :P (or is it spirit?)
more abilities that uses soul shards please, or maybe a spell called "sacrafice soul" which boosts your next spell (if it does not use a soul shard originaly) and costs a shard to use.
sorry for bad english and puncturation.. (however that is spelled)

yeah. think about it, assuming blizz are happy about dps balance, that change would make us OP. perhaps they could consider it if we were in need of a dps buff but it seems very unlikely as it is. i'd like a buff of some kind but survivability seems a more likeyl place for the buff than damage.

something like that yeah. blues have talked about ways to solve out pvp problems and for clothies that means ways to keep out of melee range. since ours have been nerfed they're looking at ways to increase mitigation so we take the hits but take less damage and, i suppose, drain through the rest of it.
if this were the case and they were looking for ways to make locks more tanky then 5% mitigation might fit well... though quite how a bag would do this for you i don't know ^^

Players used to be able to have two or three healthstones, one of each "size (untalented, 1/2, and 2/2).
My take on the soulbar was implement a bar that conatined soulpower, instead of using a bag to hold soulshards, and keep all other functions the same. My logic was that it would allow for a larger number to be collected, free up the bag space, and provide a measurable way of valuing souls. Its always bugged me that KT's soul is no bigger than a random level 72 viking I killed on a beach.
Largely, my take was just me being thinking out loud (typing out loud? the metaphor fails) while drunk. Don't make too much of my take on it.
this is intersting though... with all the hints lately about a full class overhaul, it makes you wonder exactly what they have in mind.

To help raiding: Soulwells and Rituals of Summoning no longer requires a soul shard. The point of soul shards is to prevent us from spamming certain abilities... so this is a major buff as I can't count the number of times I've had to stop during the Heigan dance to put up a soulwell >.>
no soul shard for those things is a terrible idea? scrap that and you may as well scrap the whole system!
...and... you stop to make a soul well during heigan? you're an idiot.

i normally want to have 26 shards in my last 2 bags (first 6 spaces in my last bag is hs, 40 water, 40 food, and hs) but i got a little carried away.
You have
2
HS?
o.O
I'm guessing
Health
stone and
Hearth
stone.

How about something similar to a Rogue's
Cheat Death
? Offering someone else's soul in exchange for your life.
Chance on would-be fatal damage to consume a soul shard instead and leave you with a small amount of health. Proc % could scale with bag size.
