There's a simple answer to this.
If a raptor dies in the instance, and there's no skinner, nobody receives a benefit.
If there is a mining node, and there is no miner, nobody receives a benefit.
If an item drops from a boss, and there is no enchanter, you greed to sell that item to a vendor, resulting is 10 silver-20 gold, depending on the character and the item.
That's why.

I do wish people wouldn't compare skinning or mining to enchanting.
Both skinning and mining don't cost the player anything to level, they are supplementary: nodes are independent of mob drops
Enchanting requires you to not sell random drops, but to disenchant them, and then use them to level up your skill.
The ONLY other profession that comes close to a global deduction of income of that magnitude is tailoring.
If you want to roll on shards, you can damn well pay me for enchants. Not tip, PAY.

There's that "World revolves around me, &*!@ everyone else, gimme gimme gimme cause I NEED THIS FOR SOMETHING AND YOU HAVE NO REASON TO TAKE IT ZSLGJZLGJ /NERDRAGE!" attitude.
Good luck with your pugging. I'm also incredibly glad my server doesn't have the same mindset as the greedy morons in this thread.
Gotta love american reading skillz. They are borderline 1337.
I let people roll for shards, I also charge for all enchants.
Either that or I let everyone roll greeds and just dis if I win.
Its not greedy, we are a profession that EVERYONE wants, and NOONE(nearly) wants to contribute to our leveling, or pay for our services.
Ask yourself who is really the greedy ones, the enchanters who want to increase their skill, or the people who want enchants for free, oh and their shot at shards too, btw.

I did not bother to read any comments but... If you need on the item just to disenchant it, everyone should have the title to roll for the shard because they would've had the chance to roll on the item itself, if you greed on an item and win and then enchant it the shard is all yours.
Just because you have Enchanting doesn't mean you should have all the items in the instance that nobody needs...
Edit: You obtain the item as a group, and every member of the group should be able to have his spare share (same thing as a roll, everyone has a chance to win it)This I agree with.
What I dont agree with is that everyone has the right to the shard from the item.

on the tailors extra frostweave and so on
i have never seen that in a pug.. in a guild run i would understand it, but hey, we arent talking about guild runs.
When we start rolling on your ore veins and skins something completely different for the reasons stated multiple times above (everyone can use the item - at least to vendor it, but only the specific prof can use the ore ... etc..)
you know what? leveling smithing in TBC was a huge money sink.. was a horrible grind..
and you say you need to instance with ppl to get the stuff? do it the way many of us did back then.. farm stuff, sell it.. took me a week to get my 5k for the epic bird, and i could prob do it a lot faster now.. why dont you just farm the gold, and buy the mats instead of asking other ppl to pass up on their fair share of the spoils?
also, half the money spent can be gained back by selling "scroll of enchant xyz".. you didnt have that option back then.. (it was a MAJOR money loss trying to sell all the smithed gear)
also, the vendored money usually goes to pay my repair bills (depending on how well the pug can work together ;-) )

I'm not an enchanter on any of my toons but I might pick it up on an alt but any time I am in a group and an enchanter is there I don't want the shards. Hey I could roll but the enchanter can use them more than me. I also have a few enchanters who give me free enchants because of it. or enchants that I need like 1 or 2 mats for that I don't have.
The way I see it is this I could sell that blue for gold but wow thats 20g thats a repair bill or this enchanter who just so happens to be in the group can use the thing in his own way. Its his in my oppion because he can use it more than I can even if it comes to just lvling enchanting.

Hold on.
Ores are different because only certain professions can use it?
So BoE smithing recipes?
I want a helm on my paladin, but I have to buy the mats from the AH because I cant get a fair roll on them when there is a miner and vein in the instance?
BUT
enchanters dont get to keep their shards without some luck which are basically ONLY used for BoE craftables.
Whos the selfish one again? The one who wants to keep their mats for BoE craftables, or the one who wants to do the same, and a shot at the other person's as well?

its gonna b a bit OT,but im callin all enchanters 2 start chargin PAYMENT 4 service.im fed up with ppl whos offerin me "tip" 4 my time and service.ive spend lotsa time, money and effort 2 maximize my skill, and im feelin offended by ppl tryin 2 give me some meare 10g for my enchants.its profession like all others,so start 2 value uselfs enchanters.personally im feelin like some1 slap me in face when i see some "payments".2 the main topic, its only good will of enchanter if want DE some stuff,im not forcin any1 2 use their proffesion, and no1 should force me.
Yes, it's a profession, like all others. Out of curiosity how much do you think an engineer makes at his profession? That's a profession, like all others.
If an enchanter gets the item to d/e by selecting "need" he better be allowing everyone else to roll on them, or be prepared to be put on some ignore lists. If he wins it through "greed" it's fair game.
