I just posted this in another thread but I think it works well here. So here it is.
Server patch should be flawless. A simple down, patch, verify, up. Applied to everything. That's what test environments are for. And I'm not just talking the PTR to see that abilities and scripts work. I'm talking a full fledged WoW testing environment. They should be able to identify all issues prior to even thinking about putting code in production. And especially when you list your own outage window at 12 hours you should honor that. As for armory, it's not like Blizzard didn't know it was going to be changing all of this. They should have been ready with that code for a seamless transition (as seamless as 12 hours can be). They should have been more prepared.
In my work, we streamline large patches frequently to many servers. And we do it in a manor that the users almost never know. There is no excuse for the sloppiness that was the 3.0.2 patching. Armory out of sync now, doesn't list achievements (assuming those will be visible as you can compare with people).
And I'd just like to point out... Activision Blizzard stock has continuously gone down since patch day.
Monday at closing it was @14.18 then Tuesday at opening (assuming because of the major hype around patch day) it was @15.11. Within 30 minutes dropped to 13.66 and today closed at 11.68.
The term "Beta" is no excuses for bad business practice.
That being said I have to strongly disagree with anoobia and fer11944. Blizzard knew before we even did when this patch was going to happen. They had every opportunity to test it. And work out the bugs. Going into overtime to crash course the fix isn't an option. Inconveniencing people... in today's age is bad for business, sad but true. We don't live in the old days were people were nicer and more caring. The whole world lives on a New York minute. Like it or not, it is the truth. On tuesday not only did their patch not work right (still doesn't as servers are highly unstable), it was down longer then expected as well as their website.
I got onto a different server on Tuesday to ask about my server. In the updates at the login, they only talked about retrieving characters... but my server wasn't up... what about that? GM got back to me. Know what they told me... "Go check the status page on the website". I was told by a GM.. to go to a website that didn't work...
And sorry but I have to rip this apart.
It is NOT the end of the world people so stop acting like your 12 years old! We ALL knew that come patch day, things might get a bit chaotic. So whats your excuse? And if this game really causes you such TRAMATIC problems...quit. You will be able to save a few bucks in the process. But don't blame blizzard for trying to improve an AMAZING game they have made for us. I have great respect for blizzard b/c I know that they take the gaming industry seriously. If they have problems with the servers we should be supporting them 101% not @^#%!.
...and that is the whole difference between a FAN and a CUSTOMER. (think about that)
As customers we have more then every right to complain. We are paying. We all knew the patch was coming yes, but they didn't say "BTW, server may randomly drop, your characters or items might get deleted". I agree to pay x$ per month for near 24/7 service. You might think, well that's not bad. Think about this. I pay Google nothing to get 24/7 service. Bang for buck... Google is better. So if Blizzard actually took what they did as seriously as you'd like to think... they would have tested the crap outta the patch better. I'm a customer first. A fan second. And I should be treated as such.
