I'm sure that there is a chart somewhere where they list the classes and specs by which, under perfect circumstances, is capable of the most theoretical DPS. However, in an actual raid setting, the top performers are determined mostly by skill, and to a much lesser degree by gear. There maybe certain specs of each class that are not not pulling great numbers, but played correctly any class has a good chance of leading the DPS meter.
I would say that based on fight mechanics, certain classes do better on different fights. On movement fights, melee may have a disadvantage because they lose time on the boss. On fights where you constantly have to go back and forth between targets, classes that "warm up" to their maximum DPS by applying dots, or require combo points or procs from ticks of other abilities to have their big abilities hit their hardest might be at a disadvantage. On fights where there are 2-3 main targets, classes that have cleave effects, whose main abilities have incidental AOE, or can spread dots to more than one target will come out ahead.

I have heard this question so many times and i will tell you the same as all the rest.
Every class has a different style of play Warlock and Paladin are totally different in so many ways to understand what class is best for you i suggest playing all classes up to about level 10 and see which are your favorites and go from there. I hope I helped your situation.

You guys are looking way too much into this or you just saw a few words and expected the same old question. By what I read, he is asking for YOUR opinion on what class you like to play in terms of the joy you feel when you play it, not what is the best class.
Now to answer the question posed, I main a shaman but the only satisfaction I get in terms of damage with him is the massive LL crits or the dps on the meter. The class I would choose would probably have to be fire mage just because of all the crits; it just makes me feel so mighty even if I'm not as great as I think.

Ele Shaman for me.
I love Flame Shock - Lava Burst - LB LB LB etc.
Although, I am leveling another Afflic Warlock right now, and it's tons of fun too.
Cheers.

Having played extensively since vanilla, for me it splits into PvP and PvE categories.
PvE: Dps'ing in Wrath on my Hunter and Feral was great fun, topping meters over people much better geared than me because they played poorly, etc. Extremely satisfying. In terms of big crits, nothing beats my Warrior. I love blowing cds at the beginning of a fight and watching my dps skyrocket...then at the end of the fight, spamming Execute...the highest non-fluke number I've seen thus far was 475k...and he's in bad gear. Highest fluke was just over 1 mil, at level 84 in Throne of the Tides with the buff fighting the last boss.
PvP: Feral druid, hands down. No contest. Great burst, great sustainable damage through bleeds, cc, interrupts, stealth, heals...covers all the bases.

Most satisfying class for me would be my feral druid. He's been my main since I started playing right as TBC dropped.
I just can't imagine enjoying another class as much as a I do feral. (tanking and dpsing)
I've tried all the others and always come back to the old druid :)

I like my monk, is a bit under geared so I don't necessarily see the big numbers I would like to see. I do like the fact that I can dps and tank in pretty much the same gear.

I have yet to find a class to make me stop going back to my original character. I rolled a shaman when I joined WoW, and no matter what, I continue to go back to him for my favorite character...guess its the almost 300 hours played on him.
But I did have maxed level of the following in Cata that I loved to play, and still do.
Shaman
Paladin
Warlock
Rogue
Priest

For me it's my hunter alt. Playing her at a lower skill level than my shadow priest I see big dps.

As for my most satisfying class, I would have to say my Disc/Shadow Priest. To me it's the most fun to play, especially in dungs being disc spec. I started this game back in Nov 2012 and I loved being a damage dealer. I wanted to be the one to take down the enemies quickly and move on. However I started to get bored with it since I was a mage and DK. I hate the upclose action, I would rather target from a distance. But my mage wasn't putting out the damage I was expecting (have him currently at lvl 41) and my 85DK doesn't appeal to me anymore.
I never thought I would enjoy playing a healer so I started out as Shadow, and was able to top the DPS charts in three straight dungeon runs. After reading some posts on here and checking noxxic, i decided to give disc a shot for DPS as well, even though it is listed as a healing spec. Well first dungeon we went to, the healer told me to take over and he was going to DPS. I stated I have never been a healer but I would try my best. No ones health bar moved the entire time :) I was thanked and was told for never being a healer I did a great job, and i still came out 3rd in the DPS numbers.
That's where my love of the priest came from, still dealing out the damage, and no ones health bar moving, maybe a little but never anything to worry about. I just keep everyone bubbled and use Penance as soon as i can. :)
I can't remember the players name that switched from healing to DPS in that dungeon, but if he comes across this thread, I want to say thank you so much for making WoW extremely fun for me and helping me find my place in the game.
ditto
For me it's my shadow priest.
In any given situation I can play a part in all three roles.
In 25 man raids, I'm usually top 7-12 combined with being next on the list after the main healers.
I take pressure off the healers by mitigating damage/healing myself, and because of that can play a looser style.
I've shielded, dispelled, save the tank by switching my health with theirs and even had a boss misdirect on to me when I popped dispersion to act as a tank long enough to have gotten those last dps shots in to down the boss. I almost never die in a raid.
If they had a total activity in a fight list addon...I would top it all the time.
When I'm determined to go full DPS I can, depending on the raid make up, hit top 3-5 at times.
I can use any cloth gear since spirit gives me hit rating. So i can easily mix and match gear in my bag and/or reforge/undo to keep the proper hit rating, which is paramount for a shadow Priest.
Some trinkets/weapon enchants can proc with both healing/dps.
They are awesome at pvp.
Did I forget anything :P

Yep, you forgot about soloing old content :)
j/k
Shadow Priests are fun, but I'm not such a fan now that they nerfed Vampiric Touch. I used to love all those green numbers!
Grr....I meant Vampiric Embrace.
Cheers.
