Can people really make money this way?

Okay. I have a friend that insists that her mother, who has Hep B, is donating her blood to a company called Access Biologicals for $500 per donation, twice a week. This also includes a plane trip from central Florida (where she lives) for her and her father (my friend's grandfather) to Indianapolis, plus a hotel room from Tuesday night to Thursday night.
So, for Hep B infected blood, she's getting 1k a week, plus two plane tickets and 3 nights in a hotel. Supposedly, this has been going on for over a month now, every week.
This women, the mother, has been in jail twice for inhaling electronic cleaner and has been arrested for shop lifting a few times. The most being a 1000$ at Walmart. She has also been known to get into many abusive relationships.
Now, the money is real (this woman hasn't had a job in many years, living off a ssi check). The woman went on a major shopping spree for her children this Christmas, spending a lot of money on them. I even got a few presents and I'm just a good friend. Most of the gifts were purchased online (amazon wish list etc). Also, my friend told me that she has called the hotel in Indianapolis and spoke to her mother and grandfather. So the hotel is real as well and the plane tickets too.
Now, my friend and her mother, due to the craziness of her mother's life, had a falling out over the summer. My friend is trying to reconnect with her mother, wanting to believe that the women is leading a legitimate life and is not doing anything wrong.
So here is my questions/dilemma: Is this type of money/situation even possible? It seems to me that if it was, then people would infect themselves with Hep B just to make 50k a year, plus a weekly vacation.
Also, should I push my friend to realize that something is wrong with her mother's method in making money? I'm afraid that she might be doing something illegal to get the money. And since there is a plane trip, money and hotel stay happening, my thoughts is that the mother is involved in drug running form Florida to Indiana. If my hunch is right, my friend could lose her mother and grandfather to prison.
I don't know what to do. It just amazes me really, that either someone can make money that way, or that my friend is so desperate for a relationship with her mother that she'll believe anything.

I googled the company, and it at least has a legit looking website.
I am not sure if I would trade the consequences of having a disease for easy money though.
The biggest issue I would have here, is if this woman is still drawing an SSI check, while making 1k a week off blood donations. Personally, if she is, I would report her.

The scenario of people infecting themselves with hepatitis in order to sell their blood to research companies is unrealistic. Once the supply goes up, the payments become smaller. The more people you have willing to give, the less money you have to give each of them.
Drug running is unlikely as well, due to airport security. At least, that's what I would assume. I've never been on a plane, so I've never had to deal with security. I don't know how lax they are. Could be, but if they've been doing this for a while now, I doubt it's the case.

There's no way I'd infect myself with Hep B, even with the prospect of being able to make $50+k a year.
And I agree. If she's receiving that kind of an income, there's no reason for her to continue drawing SSI.

I know you can sell blood plasma (I've done it), but I doubt that that sort of situation is legal, or even possible.
