When using the item search filters I would like to be able to strictly limit my results to items that are of my armor class. I am aware that when finding items for my monk I can start my item search on leather items, but forcing that discludes trinkets, rings, cloaks, necks, and weapons.
When I search for
justice point items that are usable by a monk. I get a bunch of cloth mixed in. Initially, I was going to suggest that you place a checkbox next to the Usable by dropdown to enable strict armor class matching. However, the more I think about it, the more I believe that it should be the default behavior. After level 50, every class gains a bonus to their combat proficiency by wearing only their highest armor type.
The issues I see with changing the default behavior are:
1. Before level 50 there is no armor specialization
2. Shaman, Hunters, Paladins, Warriors all change armor proficiencies at 40.
3. People looking for Town Gear or Transmorg Gear
But these three problems have to manifest in significantly less than 1% of all item searches, and should not be what we use to decide the default behavior.
The easiest solution is to have a checkbox next to Usable by X Ignore Armor Specialization, and would return the results that we currently see. This takes care of all three problems if people understand what Armor Specialization means. To help clarify, I would add mouseover text to "Ignore Armor Specialization" field that says "Level 50 ability that increases your primary attribute by 5% when wearing your highest armor class in all armor slots."
Additionally, level 49/50 gear transitions just about ilevel 54/55, and level 39/40 gear transitions at ilevels 44/45. The easiest fix is that we just don't care below ilevel 54, and a usable by shaman will turn up all mail/leather/cloth as it currently does. There's really no need to differentiate at the level 40 cutoffs either, since the search usually involves primary attributes. Even if you made the shaman filter want to ignore strength mail from before level 40, it will still turn up both agility and intellect items, one set of which is worthless to whatever spec your shaman happens to be.
In summation:
Change the behavior of the filter
Usable by which returns all equippable items
to a new filter
Usable by Ignore Armor Specialization, where is the same dropdown menu and is a checkbox, and Ignore Armor Specialization gives the mouseover text "Level 50 ability that increases your primary attribute by 5% when wearing your highest armor class in all armor slots."
This new filter will return all wearable items for said class at or below ilevel 54, or if the checkbox is enabled. At or above ilevel 55 with the checkbox unchecked, it will only return items that are usable weapons, jewelry, and wearable armor of the highest armor proficiency for said class.

Taking a look at this to see if we can make a filter with a simple UI for this--in the meantime, would using stat weights to return something like
