With the changes from MoP in regards to rare cut gems and perfect cuts, it seems as though prices have fallen not only through the roof, but the floor and under the basement. Perhaps it's just the few servers I'm on. In general, JC gems seem more expensive to create via prospecting than what they are currently going for (i.e. ore is more valuable than the gems). I read somewhere not to long ago that the Developers are thinking of increasing the power of "rare" gems so the ratio between the quality of Perfect Cuts and Rares are the same they were prior to MoP. Thoughts?

I'm not new, and have been doing JC since it was first introduced in BC quite efficiently and have created a nice little nest egg. Yet, sine the MoP release, nearly all gems (perfect cut or rare) are going for 3-50 gold each, type doesn't matter. This is just a fraction of the price they were going for prior to MoP. Of course the meta gems are a different story. All the way throughout BC, WotLK, and Cata
rare
gems, specifically red, orange and purple (and at times the fractured yellow) colored gems were always in high demand, and fetched a pretty copper. What I'm saying is that since rare and perfect cuts have exactly the same stats, this has provided an opportunity to over-flood the market with the top end gems. Over supply = lower prices. There is nothing rare about
rare
gems anymore.
On our server, at least for now, it's better to just sell/farm ore than to prospect it. I've always found it more profitable to stay away from the mining profession, and buy the ore in bulk, or hire employees to get ore for me. My time was more valuable prospecting, and playing the AH, than spending hours on end flying in circles.
But like I stated originally, perhaps it's just my server that is experiencing this.

Other than Blacksmiths and belt-buckles all the gear that has gem-slots in it is either: A) in Raids; B) needs faction rep to buy with JP; or C) needs faction rep to buy with VP; or D) PvP Honor/Conquest gear.
It used to be that the minute you hit max level you could buy JP/VP gear. Not anymore. So you might be seeing the result of simply fewer people out there who really have that much gear with slots on it. Not saying it ain't out there, but not not as many as there were when Cata was at its peak.

Supply/Demand my friend.
The number of people ready to buy gems is lowering, but the supply (Number of JCs) is the same.
AS a result, prices are lower since competition will lower prices to get costumers, who will always attempt to get the lowest prices.
If the low ones are bought out and ONLY then, the prices go up since more people need it and the competition to get the gems is high.
If nothing is bought out, prices lower as JCs seek to undercut eachother.

Because of the research method that we are using to get new gem cuts in MoP for rare gems I have a crap ton of cut rares of all sorts. If I have a ton then so do lots of other folks so there is likely an oversupply atm. Unless folks start vendoring these gems the market will be borked for a long, long, time.
