Yep, I made the mistake once or twice already; the MoP rares are tough, but they're soloable in most cases using your wits and abilities (that is, dotting/kiting them around usually works well enough) - it's not like the original TBC rares that required a group, but they're definitely not like Wrath push-overs.

Some classes and specs have an easier time than others. As an assassination rogue, I tend to get run over by rares while leveling (well, of course
I don't really
, but taking them down doesn't seem very feasible in quest gear). My kitty druid/paladin/deathknight/mage/warlock I expect to have no such difficulties.

They're suppose to be challenging... in exchange they spawn much more quickly, there is many more of them, and a lot of them have some pretty unique gear/vanity items/pets to offer.
I have a hard time with a couple of them, easier time with others... the one that does the spinning kick, chi blast and heals herself is a pain in my butt though. :D

They all have a cleave ability of some sort (it hits me, a plate wearer, for 100k+), so once you figure out what it is and how to avoid it they're pretty easy.
But yes I agree that the gear being BoP is really annoying. If the Mote of Harmony/Lotus rare drop from them was a little more common they'd be more worth it, but of all the rares I've killed I've only ever gotten one bag. Though that may just be bad luck, since Wowhead is marking them as a 20% drop chance.

I think the rares are a blast and a much welcomed addition to MoP. I'm a prot warrior, so I can take the hits and heal myself accordingly which makes it a little easier, but no amount of health or armor can protect you from their special abilities. Some of the rares can be quite lucrative, for instance one of the guys in Townlong dropped an epic bag that contained 2 BoE epics in it. Sold both for over 3k gold.
I personally love soloing the older content for the challenge of it, and it really feels like Blizzard wanted to keep that aspect of personal challenge by giving you challenging rares that make you dance to win rather then button smash. I love it! I'm halfway through completing my Glorious achievement, and I've found that Kal'tik the Blight is the toughest to solo. Took me about 15 minutes to kill him one day.

As an Arms warrior, I love the rares. It's been so long since I've gotten a good challenge while questing, and this is a welcomed change.
Similiarly, I enjoyed the Sha of Despair for the same reason.

There are only 8 of them really. Once you learn the 8 different types, they are easy.
A few things
1. They all have a ´you are dead if this hits you´ ability. Most of them are frontal cones.. simple go behind them. But the Panda has a whirlwind (big green circle).. you just have to get out of the attack range, either by running away from the panda or running behind most of the other ones. The fish has two.. rain dance (just run away) and torrent (must be interrupted). The monk also has two, the whirlwind at range, and then a spell that hits if you aren´t in melee range.(move out for one, move in ofr the other).
2. Learn to use your stuns.. every one of the big attacks can be avoided if you stun the mob. The same thing with interrupts, especially on the fish-guys.. you need to interrupt ´torrent´ or you will die.
3. Self-heals and defensive cooldowns - If you are a rogue, you should have recuperate ticking all the time. No matter what class you are, you should be using your ´reduces damage by 20%´ as often as possible.
There are 8 types, but in reality, only the fish-guys, the panda and the mantid are different.. the other 5 are fairly similar.
Honestly, this is what pve should be about. I would much rather kill a mob like this then kill 20 boars that can barely scratch you and require nothing more than your main attack button to kill.
The only one of the 8 that I had any problems with are the mantid as melee( druid cat), I just always seem to mess up somewhere and get hit with the cone attack because I am trying to avoid the tornado things.
I am REALLY hoping that this is what the new fight-club thing is like.. something where you are forced to know your self-heals, defensive cooldowns, stuns, interrupts and everything else your class comes with.

I've encountered 3 of them so far with my Bear. Two Mogu and the fish. The fish killed me and by the time i ran back to try again some alliance were killing him. I think it was the Rain Dance that got me. However, the two Mogu have been faceroll. With my self-healing, I never dropped below 95% health.
I imagine for a non-tank class you'll have to use more abilities and really think about what you are using and when, which really is a welcomed change.

Yeah, with raindance, you just have to run away and dodge the stars. You can also get in a FF for a little damage if you want.
But really, I think every spec has enough self-healing to do these things, you just have to know to use them. I´ve done a bunch of them on my rogue, and with recuperate and the off-hand poison that heals, they are not even close. If you aren´t self-healing, then even if you are avoiding the big abilities, their normal damage will wear you down because they are long fights.

I've seen hunters and warlocks solo them in crap gear with relative ease. I can solo most of them with kiting/doting on my druid while avoiding the "deal breaker" type moves.
My biggest point of contention is the very small radius most of them have before they Evade. Getting a rare to 25% and having them reset is no fun.
The drops being BoP makes perfect sense... it's supposed to encourage you to group up for them... I'm a leather wearer... If I see a pally/warrior mage/priest etc questing in an area where there's a rare to kill, I'll ask them if they want to join for the kill. As quickly as the rares spawn, missing a roll on a vanity item isn't really a big deal, or you can ask them if it's okay to need on it because you really want it and if they say no, you just don't invite them.

I've managed to make a joke of every rare on my Hunter. The only major showstopper was the fact Silencing Shot doesn't properly interrupt the Pandaren rare's Healing Mists all the time (or anything else but in most cases it doesn't matter/Silencing Shot properly disrupts channeling spells), making it extremely time-consuming to kill said rares without gear.
On my Warlock I had a little bit of a rougher time with certain rares, such as Jinyu rares due to Water Bolt damage (have to save CCs to stop Torrent). The fact Warlock pets are so incredibly squishy doesn't help much, but at least it's easy to resummon them and control threat with them.
My Blood DK has had little trouble. Sometimes I even stand in hazards to ramp up my Vengeance to speed up a kill.
My Fury Warrior doesn't have much trouble either. While he does take a little damage the self healing (especially below 35%) plus proper maneuvers keep me from dying.
I haven't tried rares on too many other classes, though I have some ideas on how to defeat them. Overall they are certainly a lot more difficult and I have legitimately died on some.

Saw the rare Huggalon the Heart Watcher a few days ago, even geared with full heroic dungeon gear I had problems killing him as dps. Then I had to rez and go tank spec just to have a shot at him!
I guess couple of the rares require more time and 'dedication' to kill imo.
