Yeah, they would work, but you'd need to wait for it to install, and then update it big time. Probably just easier (and faster) for you to log in to your battle.net account and download the current client. Just set it to go when you go to bed or something. If you are planning to buy WOTLK and Cataclysm, you can just input the codes from those after the install, and that content should be available instantly.
Hope that helps.

Depends on the internet connection...
Going to take a few hours regardless.

The discs don't matter, you already assigned their authentication keys to your account, log into your account (
US
/
EU
, if you already merged the original WoW account with a Battle.net account) and download the game installer from there, as people here said, it's gonna be far easier, and faster too, as the new client is "playable" after downloading only a portion of the game, around 4GB. Though, you should wait a little longer, as the game will require additional downloads
while you play
if you move around zones too much :P As mentioned, start it in the evening, and leave the computer on over night.

Just merge it and it will all be fine, don't worry! :)

Sorry, I phrased that in a weird way, esp. as you didn't merge accounts yet. No, like Treeroy already said, just merge the accounts, and then you will find a download link for the current client by selecting the WoW license of the Account Management page.
Again, the discs themselves don't matter, but the game code that came with them, that you used back then to create your original WoW account. This code is associated with your account and will always enable you to re-download the game from Blizzard's servers. The CDs only exist to avoid downloading the full game, but as they are vastly outdated, it's better to just download the current client from scratch :)
Also, didn't think of this before, if you are interested in playing the new content and haven't fully reactivated your account as in paying for game time, you can get a free upgrade to Cataclysm (and other perks) via the
Scroll of Resurrection
(see 'The New Scroll of Resurrection')
If you have friends still playing the game, tell them to send you a scroll, otherwise you can find people to send you one
in this thread
.

If you are on a US account go
here
. On the right side there is a link for "Merge World of Warcraft account." From there it is simple. I would expect if you are on a EU account then change it to
this
, but not having an EU account I cannot test it.
