To me, Ozai was like the threat of a nuclear war that could destroy civilization, and Vatu is like a asteroid far off in space that might one day crush the whole planet. Yes, the asteroid is a bigger threat, but the it's not the most present, or the one that affects the day to day lives of the most people.
Well....other then attacks from Dark Spirits corrupted by Vatu's power; because that's what he does. Vatu himself doesn't have to make a move when he can cause the peaceful invisible creatures that normally don't interact with the regular people of the world to suddenly go ape #$%^ and start slaughtering them.
I'm not sure if we are going to see an anti-avatar, but that might be Korra's uncle final move. Or we may actually start seeing people corrupted by Vatu's power and going into Dark versions of themselves.

This is me in speculation mode, but I don't think Vaatu is gonna be defeated in this season. Unlike season 1 which was a self-contained story arch, I think the whole gig with Vaatu is gonna take seasons 2 3 and 4.
Now if this actually happens, then (depending on how it's handled) I would agree that Korra would have made a more significant accomplishment than Aang.
The avatar was created when the spirit of light fused with a human, can you imagine what would happen if Vaatu fuses with a human as well? he'd create a dark version of the avatar, and this enemy has the potential to be WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more dangerous than anything else put together, because no matter how many times he or she is slain, they just reincarnate. Just like the regular avatar.
I was thinking about that too actually, but it doesn't really make sense. Wan gained the ability to bend additional elements from the lion-turtles, not from fusing with Raava, so if Vaatu fused with somebody then I don't see how that would turn them into an evil Avatar.

Yep. Like I said, its too early to tell, but if they handle it that way (instead of another self-contained story arc) then this villain may actually live up to his potential. Even better if the season ends with Vaatu being freed and fusing with Unalaq, taking control of him, and through him, use the north water tribe to wage war on the world, infusing the water troops with dark spirits to enhance and corrupt them.

whoa whoa whoa, we're mixing concepts now. Thanks to the episode about Avatar Wan, we know now, that being the avatar (Aka: having the capacity to reincarnate no matter how many times you die, being able to talk and consult with your previous lives, and serve as the bridge between the spirit and physical world) has nothing to do with having all 4 elements.
We very well could have a Dark Avatar, that initially just controls water (Unalaq) and then seasons 3 and 4 would be him trying to seek out other lion turtles to unlock the other 3 elements. Or we simply would have a Dark Avatar that just manipulates darkness rather than the 4 elements.
the possibilities are endless, they really have a wonderful well here that I'm hoping they're willing to tap to its fullest potential.

I consider the Avatar being a combination of the two. Just like you wouldn't have an Avatar without the ability to reincarnate and communicate with past lives, nor would you have one without being able to bend all four elements. It would be a neat concept to see what you described, Unalaq or somebody fusing with Vaatu and looking for Lion-turtles, but he wouldn't be a 'Dark Avatar' unless he could bend all the elements.
To me, that's what made Wan's story so cool. I always figured the Aavtar was appointed by the spirits or something and granted the ability to bend all the elements, but Wan was the combination of multiple freak occurrences, that came together in such a perfect way.

Yea, well he still won't be voiced by Mark Hammil. So there...

Just finishing watching the latest episode.
ERMAHGERD Iroh was there helping Korra. I believe that was my favorite part of the episode.
But now Jinora is trapped in the Spirit World and Korra has to save her as well as find a way to stop Vaatu from coming back (which probably won't happen and will end up having to fight him either by himself or merged with Unaloq)

Iroh is best character!
Seriously, this was an excellent episode. The only complain I might have had is that I kept waiting for Korra to spring her plan into action and make a daring rescue of Jinora instead of opening the portal. After thinking about it though, I figure she didn't believe she had any other choice. Without her bending, she had no means of confronting Unalaq, and she decided that she'd rather take the risk of having to confront Vaatu, which Avatar Wan successfully did, or losing Jinora's soul forever.
Opening the portal was a bad move, but it was the better of two bad moves she'd been forced into by Unalaq.

Did Korra's parents beat her or something? Why does she always attack everything at the first provocation...

Because she's the hot blooded bull headed avatar this time around, like Lady
Kyoshi
rather then the calm and collected Aang and Roku.

Huh, the next two weeks are double episodes each time; wonder if that means that book three will be coming out sooner?

Loved this episode, it was fun, entertaining, and had some nice moments.
There were a few times where it seemed "too" kiddie-like, but....... WHO THE HELL CARES ERMAGHERD IROH WAS BACK!!!!!
I think
this
is the only fitting reaction one should have when meeting the awesomeness that is Iroh.

That's not a reason, that's just a restatement of the original assessment.

Unlike Aang who was very in touch with his spirituality since a young age (and not so adept at bending), Korra showed she was very, very good at bending Fire, Water and Earth since she was little (able to walk/talk) this means that she uses those styles of bending as a safeguard. She's also lived a super sheltered life because of being the Avatar and doesn't know how to properly deal with people who don't intend to co-operate with her.
It could very well be that there wasn't enough discipline in her life that led her to be this way.
