So yeah, after actually seeing Rank, and since a Spirit shows up when it does, fairly obvious the twins were following her from the city; probably a 'fastest' water route to the Fire Nation, so they booby trapped it. It makes sense for them to hit her there, since it looks like the entire point was to have the Spirit try to take her out.

It's possible that her uncle might have sent a spirit after her, but it was in no way "obvious." The twins clearly appeared surprised when the spirit showed up. What the Hell would even be the point of sending those two chumps after her if the spirit was going to solo her. It's not like they all worked together, as soon as the spirit showed up Thing One and Thing Two backed off.

What a twist!
Seriously though, I couldn't read those comments. We see the last 5 minutes of an episode and half the fan base is like "Oh they're doing this thing, well I'm out". It seems like no one is willing to give it a chance to develop any.
I'm thinking that because of what happened, she does some serious meditation and meets Wan. Allowing us to see how the Avatar cycle all began. Also fixing herself in the process, and giving her some clarity on the situation in the south.

I'm no fan of the amnesia plot device. Its been overused to death, to the point that even when used right, it rubs me off the wrong way.
Kinda like the clished hot girl that we're supposed to think is ugly just because she's wearing glasses and no makeup.
Or the hardboiled cop 2 weeks from retirement that has his wife and little girl shot by punks, and goes to wage a 1man war on crime.
They're called clishes for a reason.
Having said that, I am not gonna go to the legnths some of the "fan dumb" comments have gone. I still think that even with that tasteless plot twist, the show is damned good. So I'm sticking to it like glue.
Also: Beware the silly ones indeed.

So...... newest episode of korra................. It was interesting.
Felt a little rushed, and I'm not particularly fond of the stylized art used to depict the flashback, but otherwise, it was quite entertaining, I'm eager to see the next one.

I liked the art. I also found this on the wiki.
In order to emphasize that the episodes are set in a much earlier time period, a unique art style was be used to alter the appearance and aesthetics of the setting. The design was inspired by the ancient ink wash paintings and woodblock prints of East Asia, and was achieved by changing the color palette, reducing lighting effects, and increasing stylization. However, the basis for characters' designs remains unchanged
But I'm curious as to where the temple was.

its not that I hated the art, its just that both Last Airbender and Legend of Korra, are among the best examples of animation I've ever seen. Beautifully crafted models and environments, with a quality that will make anyone's jaws drop constantly.
To go from that, to the very basic, simplistic art used in the latest episode feels like a big contrast, though I suppose that's the idea, since it does conveys strongly the different time period.

The art was fine, imo. Took a bit to get used to it, and it certainly didn't look like it was supposed to be as realistic as the regular world, but it did a good job of establishing that this was essentially a story being told.
A couple notes:
This is kind of a retcon of the previous accounts of how people learned bending. Previously, it had been established that the sky bison, dragons, badgermoles, and the moon had taught the early people bending. So either the humans learned how to bend before starting to live on the lion-turtles, or it's a retcon.
This is a very interesting account of the Avatar's origins. Previously, I had assumed that the Avatar was just a spirit, like any other, that had taken human form and acted as a liaison. It didn't even necessarily have to be as great as other spirits. With this episode, however, we find out that the avatar is a human spirit bound together with one of the most powerful spirits in existence.
The most interesting thing, though, in my opinion, is the idea that Unalaq know about this spirit bridge where Vaatu is being held, and is trying to open the portal. What if he becomes the NEGATAR?

From what I read, the creators had this thought out since book 2 of The Last Airbender. They just never had it in the open until now. And the humans could only bend when given the ability by the Lion Turtles, once they came back from hunting/gathering they had the ability taken away. Once the first humans left the cities on their backs, they were given the ability to bend. But from then on the humans had to find other ways to learn over the next 10,000 years. At some point it came to the moon and those animals teaching humans how to bend. I wouldn't think of it as a retcon but more of an expansion or an origin of bending.
And what the Lion Turtle said about in the beginning that humans bent the energy around the elements seems true. Up until Wan started to train with fire, everyone just seemed to throw it about without any thought. But then he trained and like they said, he used it as an extension of himself.
And it seems that at come point Korra will come into contact with the Lion Turtle that possibly helped Aang out, it was the last thing we saw before the episode ended.
Just to be safe, I put it all in a spoiler tag.

Saw the second half. Yep, it was awesome.
This is kind of a retcon of the previous accounts of how people learned bending. Previously, it had been established that the sky bison, dragons, badgermoles, and the moon had taught the early people bending. So either the humans learned how to bend before starting to live on the lion-turtles, or it's a retcon.
Not necessarily. Its not really a retcon.
Remember that these events took place tens of thousands of years in the past, long before the cultures and nations we know today were created. With the passing of time, history becomes legend, and legend becomes myth, until there comes a point where truth ends and fabrication begins.
Its entirely possible that as millenia passed, and new cultures arose, they created (AKA: Made up) their own explanations as to where their powers come from.
For example, in real life, nobody knows which human first harnessed the power of fire. Who discovered it? who invented the methods to create and control it? Where did this took place? when? For all we know, it may have been an ancient prehistoric caveman hundreds of thousands of years ago, who saw a tree hit by lightning, and took the branch with fire with him.
But the Greeks proclaimed that humanity discovered fire due to Prometheus stealing it from the gods and giving it to mankind.
Same goes for the Avatar-verse. Humans got the gift of bending from the lion-turtles, but as they stopped living in isolation and began creating their own cultures, indepentent of any guardians to keep them safe, they began to make up their own mythology and explanations of where their powers come from.
It may have helped that after settling in on their new surroundings, the badgermoles, dragons, moon and sky bisons did indeed served as inspiration to improve their newborn bending abilities.
I'm surprised you say that its a retcon, considering you were the one who introduced me to TVTropes, and there is a trope for what just happened with the real origin of bending:
