The secret is attitude. You have to think that you're !@#$ at the game every single day you play. Don't instantly think you're good because you totally raped that pally up the arse. He could be just bad, drunk, being pestered by his
girl
, and so on and so forth. You simply don't know the full circumstances of the fight you had with the pally, so if you really want to know whether you're good or not, ask the pally after fighting him. Sharing knowledge in this game is really underrated, but that's typical of modern video game communities. The more you play the more you will realize how little you actually know about the game; you have to push yourself into trying to become perfect at it if you want to improve.

To make the answer short - a rogue that is energy capped, a lot of crit, and a good shot at your back for either backstab spam or shadow dance ambushes will do it.
My rogue has unbuffed 17k AP, without legendary daggers or any form of pve gear. He sits at 41% crit unbuffed besides HaT (Honor among theives). A rogue speced decently and geared well (one that actually min/maxes hardcore like my rogue has EXACTLY 5% hit right now) can throw a lot of burst if they are energy capped. Often when I duel, I use my CC to rebuild energy, not just to save my life. The pressure it creates throws people from an offensive mind set to a defensive one, although I try to kill them while they are still in the offensive mind set so they go down fast.
Just to throw an example of how OP a rogue burst can be, with my 41% crit and 60% crit talent with ambush, I am basicly at 100% crit on ambush and 51% crit on backstab since I have 1 pt into talents to increase backstab crit by 10%. I usually deal 30K-40k crits on my rogue with ambush, and 30k-35k crits on backstab and the 70% armor pen from talents makes your warrior almost as weak as any caster.
It all comes down to energy, if the rogue is energy capped, he is a bomb waiting to go off.

Another thing to add, if you're into high level PvP, then you need 25-30 ms unless you're proper good. But maybe that's just me.
Anyway, my highest personal rating with Rogue in WoW was 1835, so I'm no Relentless glad :p

Yeah you need low ms for sure. I have 120ms thanks to broadband being the best internet I can get and it is just too much. When fighting any kiter (especially hunters), I can be directly behind them while running next to them and be unable to get a hit due to the lag.
Its literally game changing when you need your hemo bleed or a shiv for crippling on them and your just running behind them, seemingly in range on your screen of your melee hits but your toon says "out of range".

Ty overhaul, yeah I am indeed wondering abotu lag, I don't seem to get much, but at certain times, it does seem something has a harder tiem 'registering'. Another thing to look at, sure thing.
Don't blame lag, blame yourself. Even if you have red ping. Learn to adapt, no matter what.

Have you played at red ping? Pretty much impossible to do well. It also very frustrating for those playing against you (and just downright not fair). I'd log off and come back later if I was at red ping. It's just not fun at that point.

@#$%ing learn to adapt anyway, QQing about it on forums certainly won't help you.
Besides, if you don't think it's fair then don't play at red ping.

You'd better move closer to Blizzard's servers

A tad bit of an overreaction? I'd hardly call what I stated a QQ. You may have a lot of posts/rep, but you seriously don't need to be so rude.
And when I do have red ping (which is hardly ever), I don't play, just as I stated. But you were too busy raging to realize that.

Raging? I only start swearing when people don't get the point.

^ obviously hasn't played from australia during peak time traffic. Easily sitting at 500ms
minimum
with incredible spikes every few minutes. You simply can't "adapt" to ridiculous lag like that.

As someone said
sub - with high crit, backstab is almost 70% and ambush is 100% crit
with the 70% armor debuff, stacking agi, and a shadowstep, and energy capped, those first few ambushes will take you down like its no ones business.
Add in the premed, heal crits, and a recoup which also regens energy before engaging, along with backstab spam after the shadowdance, and you STAY energy capped, then a kidney shot, or gouge if trinketed (glyphed to work from behind), and you have no chance, unless you have a healer.
