What do you guys mostly use the profiler for?
In the old days I used it mainly to create custom profiles for import by
SimCraft
. But alas, these days the two aren't on speaking terms it seems.
Nowadays I use it for two main reasons - for quest and achieve completion - like many of the posters here - but mainly for finding gear upgrades (present and upcoming) for lowbie toons as I level them. Works great - and I dont know of any alternative resources that can cope with sub-max level characters in such a useful way
Hope it wasn't me that broke it.

I use it for:
Find quests I missed
Find achievements I still need
Find pets I don't have
Find mounts I don't ride
Find recipes I haven't learned
The profiler is to me, a big to do list. I don't really care about the gear I have and my stats, but the "Completed/Incomplete" tabs in the profiler is the best WoW to do list around!

So today Spiffy discovered--after working on a few unrelated issues to the profiler--that the profiler is pulling everyone's guild and the guild characters.
So that means if one of you looks up your character and you're in a 100 member guild, it generates all 100 characters, whether you want it to or not. It just decides you looked up X person so you probably want all of X's persons guildmates too!
I do not think this is a widely used feature at all nowadays, and I think that's probably 70% of the excess load. I never really understood how it could get so low of traffic but cause such a heavy load that frequently brought Wowhead down. Well, now I guess I get it. :P
So he's going to code that out and it should help immensely. :) He's making that his priority for Monday.(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##Ashelia##DELIM##

WoW's Armory is the best place to search for a Character, then you can see the rest of the Guild you're in from there.
That would depend entirely on what you're looking for. When I look at my toon's profile, I don't care about the guild - I'm looking for companion or mount counts, missing quests or archaeology projects, etc. And I want an easy way to navigate to the item or quest of interest to see how I can complete it - something the Armory doesn't provide.

I don't know about anyone else, but I use the profiler mainly to keep track of any enchants/gems that are missing from my characters, as well as pretty much everything everyone else has said. the official armory does absolutely nothing I need it to, at least not to the same degree the profiler does. I also use the profiler to checkout info on guilds that pm me asking to join them. the profiler gives me a good look at their activities and whether or not they are worth my time to join.
If you go to the advanced options on the armory, it shows you which items are missing enchants, gems, and any profession bonuses you don't have, such as ring enchants for an Enchanter or the extra sockets from a BS.
My mage
as an example.

Could we get a setting to opt out of notifications about the Profiler being down/in maintenance? I think I clicked it away 3 times already this downtime :P

true, but the wowhead profiler shows that info without having to change any advanced settings.
Its one click...

I use the profiler to look up recipes/plans my characters are lacking; keep track of pets, mounts and archaeology projects; and search for gear upgrades.
I have used it in the past to find quests to finish achievements, but I know have an add-on for that.
I have also used it to check reputations, achievements and profession levels.

For me the fact that it is one click has nothing to do with it. It would mean leaving wowhead to go to wows official site and while i love wow i do not love their site. Which is why the lack of forum traffic as of late has been so disconcerting.

All I was pointing out is you can in fact see missing gems, enchants and other things like that on the WoW Armory. And getting there isn't that hard. I know some people rather use Wowhead than the official site, but that doesn't mean the official site is completely useless.

Agreed. Not completely.

I find the profiler that wowhead is far better in layout and how the equipment and status is layed out as compared to Blizzard's armory page.
I know a little about MySQL and PHP web page queries - while only guessing, it appears that the delay in getting the data back from the game's database on the character's stats is holding up the entire web page display.
Some one suggested that the profiler be broken out to its own web page - that sounds like a good suggestion - break the link from most of wowhead so that local information is totally separated from remote data. I know that most of us are into "real time queries", but in this case, maybe the solution would be to set up a "start query" flag and allow the data to come down in its own good time. And individual could come back a little later and see if their character's data as in fact updated.
IMHO having old data from the profiler is WAY, WAY better than no profiler - is in IMHO (again) the single best tool out their for seeing what, where, and what's missing or needing upgraded.

A little late but I use the profiler to 'grade' my characters. It easily shows which items I need to upgrade then helps me find the possible upgrades. Another part I really liked was the missing recipes section which I'd only just found right before I quit playing WoW last time. I came back just a week ago and have been checking almost daily to see if I can check my character.
I use the site to look up quests when I get stuck but I love the site for the profiler.
