I wouldnt call playing games with friends and family a "phenomenon" or some type of new interaction.

This; my family has been playing console games ever since the NES came out, and my friends got me into WoW in the first place.

So all in all, it dident create this 'phenomenon' but its certainly feeding it.

Not just WoW though, several types of games do that. RuneScape has several different age groups in it, I played with people in their 50s. I had several real life friends that played at my school. I had one that met someone on RS and went to Texas to marry her.
I also played on a gaming website called Pogo and I would play pool with a lot of different people. Some of them would meet up and play a game of pool in person. I also got my mom to join the site and play on my account at first then she made her own.
It's not just WoW, but almost any type of game where you interact with other people that this can occur.

I actually do the same thing. I have plenty of in-game friends, but the most fun I have is when I play with my buddy who I've known since elementary school, my wife, and my GM. My GM and I actually crossed paths questing 3 years ago, starting grouping, formed a guild, and now have fairly regular phone conversations (he's in Kentucky, I'm in Texas), it's also cool that he's an IT manager and I get all sorts of in depth computer advice and don't have to call the geek squad when something happens. :D
