World first comments

I am relatively new to the site, and have a question: Do 'world's first <mount/pet/kill> gotten by <character> from <guild>' comments add anything of value to a wowhead page?
Mounts/Pets are a question of RNG. Kills are indeed an excellent achievement, but there are realm/world first in-game achievs, as well as wowprogress ladders to celebrate that. The purpose of wowhead is to inform/occasionally entertain, not celebrate achievements/stroke egos. Or at least that is my opinion.
What is the official policy? I see them being upvoted like crazy, so obviously a lot of people like them, but even if the policy is that they do belong on the page, I'd like to hear some reasons why.

This is a community driven site. There are things that definitely don't belong on comments pages and many of those things are covered in the (essentially anything inappropriate or misleading) but if you find the sort of information you describe to be unhelpful then you should make your voice heard by rating those comments down.
I think that world first boss kills are a fair thing to post on boss pages because that's something that lots of people are very interested in. It's followed closely when raid content is released and it's also impartially verified (as much as possible). World first mounts or pets are far less interesting and realm first
anything
is likely inappropriate for a site like this that covers all realms.
Basically:
Vote down what you find unhelpful.
Report what you think is inappropriate/misleading for moderator attention.

Fair enough. I do indeed vote them down, but based on how few upvotes I've received myself (;_;) I got the feeling that was an implicit 'vibe' I was perhaps missing out on. It made me think that even if the official rules do not encourage this, perhaps the community does unofficially.

Well, "communities" are a strange thing to try and predict. It's made up of individuals and sometimes all it takes is a few people who think something is awesome while the mass of people don't care (ie. don't actively downvote) to make it look like a larger trend occurring.

I think world first comments are completely fine and interesting so personally I get why people leave 'em. As an administrator, I wouldn't downvote or upvote them--it's something I let the community decide, as Asakawa said. So downvote what you find unhelpful, other people will do the same, and if it ends up positive...then other people probably found it more helpful than you did :)

the only mount that i can think world's first matters on is
Ashes of Al'ar
just because it wasn't actually a drop and it's a truly moving story.

It's funny that you mentioned that particular mount because the most upvoted comment on that page isn't about Ezra, it's about Method getting the world's first drop >_>
Heck, it's even replied to with an upvoted (outdated) link to their website :|
Oh well.
