Hi. I'm Godwolf. I'm a mage. Or, I suppose, I play a mage. My mage's name is Banaritaz. To save anyone the effort of ruining my attempt at helping people by linking by rather embarassing profile... I'll do it!
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/exodar/Banaritaz/simple
That's my mage.
But I love theory. I love talking about mages, QQ'ing about them, ranting about them, discussing how to be better with them. And, honestly, I'd like to help other mages if at all possible.
So here is what this thread is for. PvP help. If you have any question at all relating to Mage PvP, please ask. In return, I shall do my best to answer it. If I don't know the answer, I'll find it for you. If you're scared of forum trolls or getting bad information or just scared of asking a question that's in a sticky you missed or in a thread somewhere else, don't worry about it. I'll answer it anyways and with as little sarcasm as I can possibly do.
Not only that, but I will be checking this thread constantly until I decide to effectively "close" it. Which basically means get bored of it and deleting the OP. The best way to avoid that would be by asking lots of questions.
I more than welcome discussion from others. Encourage it, even. The spreading of correct information and enthusiasm for PvP can only be good for these forums :)
Lastly, I will be constantly updating whether I'm currently checking or not checking this thread so you know whether it may only be a few minutes before you get an answer or a few hours.
TL;DR:
You need an answer to a Mage PvP related question. You ask here. I answer. Other people chime in to correct me or to fail to correct me.

Ok...here the question: I can buy three pieces of vicious PvP set when i get to 85. Two of them are going to be 1650 honour pieces and the other one is going to be 2200 honour. For the 2200 one should it be head or chest?
Thank you, for your answer.
I'll answer your's first, since it's a lot easier to answer.
First, if money isn't an issue, the helm. The meta slot is invaluable and so is the head enchant. It just offers a huge mount of stats on one piece of gear. So, yes, Helm.
If money matters to you, go chest. You're going to have to replace either piece of gear eventually anyways via Ruthless, so always get the cheaper stuff first and replace oldER gear with Ruthless.
--
As for you, Arc, a lot to say.
You need 4% hit, or as close to it as you can get without going under or much over,
You need far less spell pen. Around 200 or so.
You need enchants on your gear. Maybe you have them and armory is glitchy, but yeah.
I'm not a fan of your specs, to be honest, but if they're purely for casual BGs and you don't like doing much CC, then it could be just fine.
As far as gearing, I recommend just going Crit and Intellect. Lots of intellect. You should just be hanging back and nuking ina BG anyways.
And sorry for lack of specifics and lack of speedy response. Crazy day. And the specifics are lacking because without the above stuff being changed, there's no point going further. And, if you're playing CASUAL BGs, then there's no point in changing your specs at all, as they should serve their purpose well (Personally, I prefer other flag carrying specs, though.)

I'll help out here a little bit as a filler.
Vorret: After getting your hit and spell pen, hitting the crit cap (33.34%) is best because that makes it so you will crit every time if you target is frozen or when you use fingers of frost. After that, mastery is great because almost all your damage will be buffed near exponentially since your target is almost always frozen or you have fingers of frost.
W8up1: It looks like you're doing good on your gear. For your spec, I would move your point in Enduring Winter to fill out Improved Freeze. Good to know you will get those charges. The increased range of Fire last isn't that much and the crit chance is wasted once you reach the crit cap. I would move those points to Burning Soul. Glyph of Polymorph isn't all that good since you will only need to deal with your partner's glyph of hemo which applies a small dot, but that shouldn't be much issue. I would use Glyph of Frost Armor, so that you can easily use it against melee and not run down on mana.

Hey, Vorret.
There are two ways most mages will reforge. It depends completely on your personal playstyle and the comp you're running. I'd personally advise you to go with the basic following rules:
If, in arena (Including the buffs from your partners) you're under 17% crit, you need more crit. Period.
If you're finding yourself using lots of Ice Lance and not having much success with Frostbolt, go Mastery. It'll increase your damage more than Haste will and maximize your damage during DF. I believe this is considered to be optimum in Wizard cleave, especially with a warlock and probably with an ele shaman. not sure what's working best with Spriest. Trying both couldn't hurt.
If you're using Frostbolt a lot and sheeping lots, Haste is probably your best bet. Haste is considered by some the best stat for those with smooth and constantly play. It SLIGHTLY improves all aspects of your play, so if you're playing well in all aspects, you're getting the biggest gain. I also recommend Haste in any comp where you're being trained a ton and your damage doesn't need to be as high (For instance, Warrior/Mage/Healer or DK/Mage/Healer. Same with RMP or Feral/Mage/priest.)
Like I said, it's very opinion based and the best thing for you to do is try both and see what FEELS best. That matters more than what anyone tells you. And maxing any of a Frost Mage's off stats right now is viable. For the record, I'm not disagreeing with Meldoron. Stacking crit just... It can easily become wasted. Remember that 33.4% is only the hard cap. there are serveral frost mage soft caps that are going to apply FAR more often. not to mention the impossibility of reaching that much crit in current gear levels.
W8up1-
Your gearing seems reasonable. I'd have said go with MH/OH for more raw SP, but that's fine. Nothing WRONG with it, but when you move into Ruthless, I'd advise the change.
You currently have 1337 crit rating. I very much approve of that.
Enchant your shoulders :P
And, as far as your spec goes, I have one pretty big change for ARENA style play (it's probably less important for BGs) but I SERIOUSLY advise taking two points of of Shattered Barrier and putting one more into Frost fire orb and another into Blazing speed. Blazing speed because you're so close to getting a really strong talent as is and the point into ffo... Just because. I honestly don't have a super great reason for this other than it's REALLY useful against healers pillar humping if you actually get it to land and that Shattered Barrier shares a DR with Improved Cone of Cold. So it's bad.
Lastly, glyph of Frostfire bolt > Glyph of Cone of cold. a ranged slow is not as good as an instant cast Frostbolt with a DoT.

Hey, tornpage.
The short answer is that, sadly, you really can't. Especially considering you're not a human mage (who can, at the cost of resil, pick up a lot of offensive stats).
If you really want a lot of Haste, you'll simply have to take the crit loss. You're playing with a rogue in your 2s, though, so you can cut some crit without taking a huge nerf. For instance, a lot of top mages are running 19-21% crit right now (Armory ftw), so you can drop yourself down to 15% crit and still have as much crit as them in the arena match. unless THEY are playing with rogue/feral. In which case... yeah.
There's just no way to boost your gear magically. Any plus you get to haste HAS to come out of either Resilience (By using a PvE piece) or mastery/crit. However!
All is not lost. Just try to focus on only getting out Frostbolts when the enemy is CC'd. get used to juking. And learn to CC people without using Poly and learn to use other CCs to LET you drop the Sheeps.
I wish I could help more :\ All mages have the same problem, really.

If this thread is still alive and kicking, I could use some pointers for my mage.
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/nazjatar/Alynil/simple
gear really sucks, I recently came back after a month or so hiatus, so I'm using what pieces I could easily get. I currently have 3300 honor points, but am really unsure what to buy first. My current method of grinding honor points is via random bg's.
Any suggestions as to what are the most important pieces to buy straight away?

It's alive as long as people are asking questions =D
Sorry for the delay, dragonsbane91. I got halfway through writing a response to you yesterday and realized I needed to shower. Came back, wrote three words, saw the time, swore and then went to bed.
Take 2!
As far as getting honor goes, just do TB and randoms. Just like always.
As far as gearing, luckily, Blizzard has made it relatively easy. The honor almost perfectly represents the stats on the gear. So there's no real "good" order to go in. It's all going to be worth the price, so to speak. So with that note, think about how you plan on upgrading your upgrades.
The shoulders for instance cost 1650 honor. But they need a gem AND a -2000- honor shoulder enchant. So their actual cost for full use is quite high. Which doesn't matter so much if you don't plan on upgrading them. But don't rush for honor shoulders if you can get Ruthless shoulders soon.
On that note, ALWAYS buy your weapon first. It's the only item that will legitimately give you more damage per honor point than anything.
Then I recommend helm. Because you really, really want a meta on your gear. Boots for the run speed enchant. And then whatever you want while always keeping in mind how expensive it will be to gem/enchant and how soon you will replace it.
Of course, if you're sitting on 500k gold, this is all bunk. Buy whatever you want.
TL:DR-
Buy your weapon, 2 piece (Helm, Gloves) 4 piece (Helm, Gloves, shoulders, chest/legs). PvP trinket somewhere along the line. Always keep in mind expenses and what you can realistically do.

Why would gold matter for pvp gear? Are there pvp items I can purchase with straight gold?

Buying gems, mainly. And enchants. I mean, clearly, if you can avoid buying +20 stats to chest on something you're going to replace in two weeks, you should. +15 will hold you and cost you FAR less.
That's all I was trying to make clear.
