Class Achievements/Path of the...
INTRODUCTION
:
So this is not Path of the Titans..or maybe it is, if you go back to the darkest depths of Blizzard HQ and their designers danky basements or something. It's perhaps a way to learn a class, and show knowledge and skill of playing a class.
Whilst it wouldn't get much chat in forums such as EJ, it might stimulate discussion in forums frequented by the non-harcore/theorycrafters, particularly around best strategies to achieve the objectives - which is surely what you want and would be a good environment for learning.
PROBLEM/ISSUE/QQ
:
Looking For Dungeon tool is becoming a difficult to use feature. Players require a certain item level to gain access to heroics, however there are ways around the item level criteria and as such does not mean the player is of sufficient skill to play, but only that their gear is of high enough level.
In a group environment, it can be difficult to see who is individually accountable. This might help some accountability, without being g***score (who knows what you can get banned for saying these days? ;))
PROPOSED SOLUTION
:
An advancement system, similar to Path of the Titans, but based around specific classes and their skills but related to more classic style achivements like those found in...for example, Call of Duty (i.e. get 50 headshots).
Bear with me here...
This thread
here
got me thinking about performance-based ways of ascertaining if a player is really good enough to be in heroics; but instead of simply role-based, I took it further to class-based (this is largely around my feelings that classes are becoming more and more homogenised in a somewhat lazy attempt at balancing - there should be pro's and con's to choosing a class - not all classes should be able to do X, Y and Z, but that's another discussion...).
Previously I had readied an idea around class factions and involving class quests again, to help players learn skills and strategies for their characters (warrior quest where mobs can only be killed by shield reflecting, etc, etc); however this would be too much work and also changed things a bit too much.
This seems a bit more workable, but would depend on the engine and system as to whether it could actually do the things proposed (which I'm sure it could) and perhaps like the path of the titans originally intended, a way to level your class and not just your character.
For example, as a rogue, keeping a mob sapped for ~5mins could provide a class-achievement. Fighting (and successfully downing) 5 bosses in level-cap dungeons, but only hitting from behind, could again provide another achievement for a rogue, etc, etc.
These are things which any player who actually takes the time to play their class properly will get these no problem; others might take a bit longer, and actually have to look at what they need to do for an achievement and set out to do it, but therein lies the learning and possible discussion with those who have done it who can give tips.
This is only the startings of an idea, so would be welcome to suggestions towards it from others (especially around possible achievements for classes, as I've only raided with a warrior, rogue and paladin), so please input.
I thought it would be good to hear the thoughts of Wowhead people (as well as the Official forums, despite the latter being a hotbed for all things...naughty.)

That's actually really clever, I like that a lot. Maybe for holy priests, you got "Use Holy Word: Sanctuary three times in one level cap boss" for 10 points or something. Though in not quite sure how well that would be implemented, it is a very good idea. I would love to just keep in touch with making these kind of achievements up and maybe some day they would be implemented.
You sir have a very creative mind.

I think another way this can be beneficial is you could tailor the achievements specifically to bosses and their abilities. Take your mention of the more indepth class quests (which I love, by the way, I miss class quests). You could warp that class quest around into the achievement "
Avoid taking any damage from <Boss>'s <Moderately Dangerous Spell> by using your Spell Reflect ability
". I don't know about anyone else, but when I first started, I paid
very
little attention to my utility abilities. I think the first time I actually used Kick or Gouge on my rogue to interrupt a spell (let alone stunlocking) was around level 50-something, maybe later.
A system like this could bring attention to a player's utility skills that they might have overlooked. Though, I suppose it's a little better now that you don't have to wade through new ranks of 5 other spells to find actual new skills.
In addition to that, it also helps teach the player (in this case, the warrior tank) the value of doing what you can to reduce stress on the group (particularly the healer in this scenario). This seems to be something that isn't as common as I'd like to think, and it's especially valuable now that Cataclysm dungeons have many more dangerous mechanics that we haven't seen for all of Wrath.

Certainly my thinking - i.e. I played rogue for ages before knowing that Feint reduced aoe damage by 50%. I now use it all the time in Cata HC's to minimize incoming damage.
These would have to be implemented with base skills, i.e. ones that are not talented, as then it forces people to use these talents, even if it is the best, as I know Blizzard say they hate to pigeon-hole players into certain cookie-cutter specs, etc.

In your defense, I don't know when you made your rogue, but Feint didn't get the AoE reduction until early Wrath.

Alternately, you could implement a set of achievements for each spec. Especially in the case of a Warrior, or Druid as another major example, there are situations where an important skill/utility would be completely inapplicable simply because it's not usable in a preferred stance, or it has no purpose. Realistically, a Fury warrior (sticking to our example!) would never be in a position to get that Spell Reflect achievement. Partially because he's not tanking, but also because doesn't have a shield euqipped to use the ability in the first place.

I discovered it when I was raiding ICC...........

Three immediate achievement thoughts:
1. Do not get hit with
Quake
during an entire Heroic Stonecore run - 10 points
2. Do not get hit with
Crystal Storm
during the Slabhide encounter in Heroic Stonecore - 10 points
3. Do not be killed by Corobus' leaping during the underground phase in Heroic Stonecore - 5 points

Sounds good, you could also have ones like
"As a Hunter, use your Feign Death ability to reduce aggro 50 times"
Yup right idea.
As a Rogue, Using your Feint ability reduce incoming damage up to 100k dmg.
Or something...

I like the idea. Bring back class quests. These quests will actually teach you how and when to use your spells. Maybe instead of just buying the spell you actually have to learn the spell from the trainer. I think you should still have to pay for the training but instead of just getting the new spell you have to use it in combat with the trainer before you can use it else where. Or just make class quests to learn spells optional for ach points. This way you get to see what the spell does and how and when to use it.

So here are a few ideas...
Rogue
Block 100k incoming boss damage using the Feint ability
Hunter
Using the Feign Death ability, lose aggro on 50 elite creatures in dungeons
Warrior
Inflict 100k damage using your Shield Reflect ability
Druid
Replenish 150k mana for other players using the Innervate ability
Shaman
With less than 35% mana, use your mana tide to help replenish mana 5 times during dungeon encounters
They actually turn out to be similar to achievements in Team Fortress 2, which are fantastic and a good way of learning how to play the different classes.
Anyone know a better board in the official forums to place this suggestion? I genuinely think it might have legs...so to speak.

Shaman
After hitting zero mana, use your mana tide to help replenish mana 5 times during dungeon encounters
this one is bad, it's better to use it before you go oom so you have a chance to use it a second time
and it's impossible to hit exactly 0 mana because as resto you have meditation wich means you have some mana by the time you have cast your spell
Yeah okay, I already added the caveat that I do not know the other classes, I'm just putting out ideas.
Come up with something better, and what do you actually think of the premise itself?

Now changed to 'less than 35% mana...'

Even if that's not what it's intended to be, achievements could lead to gearscore-like behavior in some ways, though I guess there would be relatively ways to avoid most of the problems, at least those that come to mind right now.
Would that necessarily be a bad thing in this case? Gearscore was such a problem because of the way it gave this number that everyone used to wave their around. While the tool itself offered other analytical tools, no one used them, so it became a contest of who had the
bigger
higher number.
In my opinion, if people start demanding a certain number of "class achievements" be completed, or certain ones be completed, it would at least be a reasonable and telling indication of the person as a player, and whether they know the functions of their class, and have put them into practice. You could get a high GS by being carried, whether through favour or by paying. In this case, you'd have the complete the critera. Granted, you can't guarantee that they'll actually put it into practice, but this way you'd know that it was the player being a lazy jerk, and not a case of ignorance. (This says a lot about a player, at least it does to me.)

Or just let players actually read their ability's, visit forums, and otherways spend time researching their class. The game is already easy enough, people should just put some effort into it if they want to be good.
Also, I doubt this would help because yeah, you can have the achievement, but thats no reason to actually do that stuff in dungeons/raids.

Well they're not going to get an achievement for actively doing something 50 times in a dungeon if they don't do it, are they?
These are not passive achievements. You have to do things to get them.
