The grammar test, I cannot deny, is indeed discriminatory in it's very nature. But it is one of the most affective and sure-fire ways to screen out gold farmers who most likely want to get into the guild to place fake orders. This is unpreventable to some degree. Regretably, some people will not be able to get into the guild because of their inability to pass the grammar/spelling test. However, if the person can provide proof (solid proof of any kind) that they are indeed not a gold farmer, then they will be wavered from taking the grammar/spelling exam.
The irony is mind-blowing.
Also, anyone can look at the AH, see what's low level that sells well, obtain said items and put them in the AH. For example, deviate fish (probably cooked moreso than uncooked) sell for 60g a stack on my server. Any level 10 can buy a fishing pole and make a thousand gold a day.

Blatant racist comments =/= a good way to draw people to supposedly altruistic causes.
It's people like you, that make people like me.. Kill people.
Nothing the OP typed was racist, youuu jackass :l
Racist in that it's discriminating against specific races (namely anyone that doesn't speak English fluently,) but not racist as in hate-mongering. Due to technicalities in the working world, this would fall under the equal opportunity act. Good thing we're not at work. ;)

Ok- so, if you believe that someone who commits a certain type of crime or fraudulent activity is most likely to be of a certain nationality, or ethnic background (in this case, any nationality that is not a native English speaker), that is I believe the definition of racism. If you then protect yourself by screening not for the activity itself, but for indications that the person is a member of the ethnic group you associate with that activity, that is, I believe, the definition of discrimination.
It's equivalent to a law enforcement official who believes that people of a certain ethnic background are more likely to have drugs on them, so to keep drugs out of the community he tries to exclude anyone with the traits he associates with that ethnic group (appearance, language, accent, etc.).
Please consult a dictionary for any further confusion on the issue.

Not that I condone racism, but what he's doing is perfectly legal in his gaming experience. No, I don't think it's right but he's allowed to discriminate against whoever he wants as long as he's not infringing upon their happiness.

Your methods of determining who is and is not a gold farmer is racist. That is the topic at hand. Also, you're running a gold-making scheme that anyone with half a brain can recognize. Lock the topic please.

The last few posts have me somewhat discouraged.
I see how I would seem "racist" against a certain group or ethnicity. However, no where in my posts that I can remember do I outright say "Chinese/Japanese/Korean Gold Farmers are to blame". If I have then please tell me, and I will go back and correct this mistake. Gold farming and illegal sales of gold within WoW are done by many different races and ethnic backgrounds. I don't discriminate the ethnicity or the race, only the act. I am in no way a racist.
Please gravitate back to the topic at hand with your posts.
Thank you.
You don't have to outright say what ethnicities you're screening out to be racist (although, now that you HAVE said them, you've pretty much confirmed the point I was making).
Let me give you an example- right after the American civil war, when slavery was abolished, a number of southern states didn't want African Americans to be involved in voting. However, under the law, they were not allowed to exclude them based on the color of their skin, so they decided to institute screening policies which, while they didn't actually SAY they were designed to discriminate against African Americans, would effectively keep them from voting. They instituted literacy tests (it had been illegal to teach slaves to read, so almost no former slave could pass it), and clauses where you could only vote if your father or grandfather had voted (if you father or grandfather had been slaves, they of course hadn't voted).
In your head, gold farmers are all from certain countries (and apparently, you feel that ANYONE from those countries is probably a gold farmer), but you don't want to say "I will not accept you if you are from X, Y or Z countries" because you know it makes you look like a $%&@#. So, you institute a "literacy test" which is designed to tell you whether or not someone is a native English speaker, or from one of the countries you are targeting. And then you exclude them if you think they're from one of those countries. So...yeah, that's racist.
Please tell me, what other point could a literacy test have in determining if someone is a gold farmer or not, other than letting you know if they are non-native English speakers?
If i've forgotten to mention this earlier: People keep asking where the "profits" from the guild come from as to adress the constant claim of cheaper prices that i've been making. Proffessions like skinning and fishing often bring up things that the guild does not deem worthy to be sold (either because there isn't a high enough demand for it or it wont sell above a certian amount. An example would be the loot you get from killing mobs for skinning and the little chests of goodies you sometimes get whilst fishing). In my personal experience, one session of farming leathers brings the following -
*250+ borean leather
*10+ arctic furs
*120g+ in vendor trash sales
This is all accumulated within about an hour and a half. And whatever green item(s) drop they're sold through the guild (if they posess the proper attributes of demand and cost).
I think you missed the point- we're not asking how people make money with your guild- we're asking how people make MORE money with your guild than they would otherwise- of course if you farm, you will make gold. What I am saying is that- if people farm for themselves, they get the same about of gold and vendor trash, and the same amount of sellable items- you are claiming that by selling them to you at a reduced price, they are making more gold than selling them to someone else are a normal price. I am asking how it is MORE profitable to farm for your guild than to farm for the AH. If all sellable items are sold for less than AH prices, AND your guild keeps part of the gold, then you do not make as much. And this thing where you can sell vandor trash for slightly more than it's worth vendoring for is silly- someone should take a loss of 10+gold per stack of saronite to gain the benefit of gaining an extra 10-20 silver per stack of vendor trash?
I don't know how you plan to succeed by recruiting people who can pass literacy tests- anyone who can read can tell your guild is a way to make money off of its members.
