Do you tell people you play WoW?

That I play WoW isn't something I put out there right off the bat, if people ask at some point, I'll just tell them I play it, most of the time it's a "Ah", followed by a head tilt or nod, never gotten any bad looks.
I've never met anyone who's shocked that I play, a few of the people I've talked to about this have actually asked me if the game is as bad/addictive/destructive as the media has made it look, and I just tell them it can go either way. I've been able to talk to people more easily outside of WoW thanks to having to talk to total strangers through Vent/TS usage, but I also know people who've let WoW consume their lives.
Then sometimes it's nice to find out that the other person plays as well, quite a few people I've met in school play WoW, not just students, but parents, professors, TAs, waiters/waitresses, plenty of people from different occupations. Gives you a very solid platform to form a new friendship over.

If people ask me, I will reply yes.. I'm not ashamed of playing the most popular computer game ever made. I'm not a unique snowflake. I do not get ridiculed because I play since I'm an adult and live in an adult society, plus alot of people from my workplace play on a daily basis

Yes; if you like the game, sing it loud, sing it proud, and screw the idiots.
This.

I tell people if it comes up, but make sure that the initial... confession is as self-deprecating as possible. Means I can get in a "that's so sad/nerdy" before they can, which instantly diffuses any unpleasantness.

<stuff> ...even the nerdiest among them laugh at WoW... <moar stuff>
I have always found this odd. Might be that only I see it that way, but that just sounds like people who know, like, computer coding and stuff have the nerve to laugh at WoW players.
I have had similar experiences. Among others, this friend of a friend who goes to the same school as I plays Runescape like hardcore. And calls me, and a few other WoW players there, nerds. I just don't get it. What makes WoW more nerdy than other games, especially when it is actually
much
more social than the games of those who think like that.
Edit: You don't stop having fun when you're old; you're old when you stop having fun. ^That

As someone else said; I don't open the conversation with it, but if someone asks I'll tell 'em. Often I do get asked, as my 'Tanks... You're welcome' and 'Fear Hogger' t-shirts are among my favourites.
My work colleagues know as well - I work in a bar and use the Horde crest keychain for my till key, where I hang it up at the end of the shift next to everyone else's keys. One woman at work tried to give me a hard time about it, until I pointed out she's 34 and has a
Diddl
keychain for her till key. Mhmm.
The weirdest reaction I've ever gotten, funnily enough, came from work. When my boss heard I played WoW she, for some reason I can't fathom, found it unutterably funny to change my till ID from to 'Ripley' 0.0 Not sure where WoW = Alien, but there you go.

I got started in WoW mostly because of my young son's account, just to see what the fuss was about. I was really thinking it was something that dopey older teenagers and younger adults would be into, not a 46 year old (now 50 yo) fellow would ever do. Certainly not doing a game that cost a monthly fee to participate in, when there are/were plenty of games online to play for free. Aside from a Quake CTF server I used to run, I've never been that much of a gamer before.
I've been very pleasantly surprised at the number of people, some I've known for some time, who turned out to be big WoW players. At a local Linux install fest meeting several years ago, I saw one of our members installing the latest Fedora on a computer he'd just pieced together, and then after about another hour, I saw him starting up the WoW client and playing his end game shammy. Turned out he'd been playing since beta, and was big into the WINE-WoW community.
Another person, a fairly new co-worker that I was getting to know, and I were discussing our after-work time, and I in a somewhat embarrassed way, mentioned my son was playing this weird online game called WoW (didn't mention at first I also played it), and with a big smile he said he been playing since Day One, had a geared out warrior and talked about his raiding experience. In fact, had just raided the night before. Told me to join his server and sent me bags and gold to help level my then priest main.
Another time, I saw a complete stranger in a fast food place, wearing an Alliance tabard t-shirt, in line just ahead of me, in her mid 30's. I just couldn't help myself, and with a chuckle, said "Lok'tar!". She turned around to me, smiled and said "Ishnu'ala!". After ordering, she and her husband and I and my wife sat together, and she and I discussed our and our children's toons, and my wife and her husband rolled their collective eyes and discussed being "WoW widows".
Now, I don't feel at all ashamed to mention my WoW playing!
This would fit nicely into my
random IRL wow player encounters
thread :(

I... Never bring it up, and if asked, I dodge the question with all the skill of an American politician.

It seems that the younger you are the more you care about playing a game.
Kinda sad
