How often are people getting kicked from guilds?
Maybe because I've only ever been in one large raiding guild (the rest being semi-small social/PvP guilds), but I've never been booted seriously (we will often boot someone from a guild as a joke, such as "You don't agree with my opinion? *fake rage + boot + reinvite*).
This is a serious question by the way... I often see threads like this, and wonder how often it happens.

I've only been kicked from a guild once, and it was seriously the oddest reason, ever.
I'd been pugging (before the random pug finder) with this group of 4 players for a couple weeks, and they had a spot open up for a DPS in their guild. They invited me because I was decent in their PUGs.
Join the guild, everything's going fine - was with them for a little over a month, participating in raids, getting loot, etc. I finally get a working mic for voice chat and said hi guys one night in vent - and got guild booted. Get a tell from the GM saying:
"Sorry, we don't allow chicks in the guild."

I've only been kicked once, and it really was wierd.
In tbc, I was completly in love with the Arcane Spec for Mages. And I played it rather well. I joined a guild to do some raiding and on the first SSC run I did with, I got kicked mid Lurker fight... The GM happend to be a fire mage, and I apparently beat him on the DPS meters. The message was "The members have to look up to me as I am the GM, so you can't be better than me. And they will not respect me if a girl is doing a better job than me." Then he said I could join again if I flashed him on msn... And was very serious about it. Never talked to him again.

They were doing ICC10 and had me on a "backup DPS" list if one of their DPS couldn't make it.
I was then invited to a ICC10 run with another guild I know. I figured "well, I'm already in this one. So f-it." and went on the run.
The guild leader saw where I was and started flipping out I might get saved. I'm thinking "It would be for a week, and we all know I'm at the bottom of your retarded list" and told him I could use the gear from this run to be more prepared if I actually got into one of the ICC groups in my guild.
He had the members take a vote and I just barely managed to stay in the guild, with him still flipping out.
If you really felt that way, you should have cleared it with your current guild's raidleader; as it stands you did deserved a kick there.
Yeah, I don't get what is with guilds and the idea that people will just sit around doing nothing
in case
the guild needs them later. Sorry, but you don't dictate to me what I can do in the game unless you're paying my subscription fee.
They do dictate what you can do in the game
if you stay in that guild
; if you like just leave and find a guild that does let you get saved; chances are they won't progress very far.
If you join a
serious
raiding guild, there are certain expectations and commitments; main one being that you are expected to be able to join the raids. This includes being benched but available for raiding later. Getting saved on the guild's progression raid in a pug before the guild has finished raiding for the week, and you could very well hamper the guild from finishing raiding that reset.
PuGing it after the last scheduled raidday of the week is perfectly fine, and why you se so many pugs the day before reset.

So violating guild rules are stupid?
It might be a stupid rule, but there are better ways of dealing with that then just ignoring them

I will say this in regards to stupid guild rules, the same as I feel with stupid laws:
A stupid law is worse than none at all.
Stupid rules should not be followed. Stupid rules should not be enforced. The fault lies on the idiot making and enforcing said stupid rule, not the people who say "This is ridiculous" and choose not to follow them.

I was not kicked, but I left a guild (actually, about ten of us left a guild) when my friend (a long-time and active member of the guild) was kicked for using the word "*!@#s*" on Vent. Despite the fact that the guild leader himself occasionally used actual curse words, my friend's utterance of the word "!@#$s*" somehow offended the GL's wife, and so they kicked her.
*Since Wowhead's filter blocks this - it's a (typically non-offensive) slang term for mammary glands, rhymes with 'tubes'.

When you join a guild, you agree to follow their rules whether you think they are stupid or not. The only way to change stupid rules is to bring them up for discussion, and have them stricken. A world without rules is anarchy (by definition, really). If you can't abide by the rules, find another guild (or start your own).
So really, the fault lies at the person who says he will follow the rules, then ignores them when they are "stupid" or does not fit the current needs.

I would only think that rule would be in affect for the "Current" content. I would even include ToC in it.
