So i heard a terrifying rumor from my brother whos a manager at EB games, from his friend at his store who heard from his Big boss area manager, who supposedly read something posted by a Blizzard employee.......that Cataclysm isn't being released until next year. Apparently with the amounts of beta testing and other bits n pieces needed to be finished before a release could happen, that the game won't be ready until after Christmas, or at the latest February next year.
Rumors are usually just that, rumors...but my bro seemed pretty damned certain that what he heard was true. So has anyone else heard said rumor?
Yes, I've heard the rumor. I find no reason to believe it. A "friend of a friend of a co-worker of a family member of my dog's groomer" isn't a respected source.
P.S: My bro also made a good point...if Blizzard was intending to release the expansion within the next 4 months, they would have announced a release date by now.
The release date for Burning Crusade was not officially announced until three months prior to the release.

I was thinking that if they planned to release it within the next 4-6 months pre-orders would be available.
This leads me to think they have not yet set a concrete release date, though I have not yet mentally ruled out the possibility they will get it ready to go in time for the Christmas holiday

In addition, there's no reason that Blizzard can't change their approach. They may have decided that for Cataclysm, the announcement won't go out until one month prior to release.
For my own part, I'd love to release it and
then
announce it. I doubt it would work financially, but wouldn't it be great to have people log in one day only to find that the world has changed? I suppose it's just the prankster part of me that would find this amusing.

Pre-orders mean nothing, just as Maldazzar said. I went to EB games to pick up a gamecard the day after Blizzcon had started. I asked them when they will be taking pre-orders for it and they told me they had already started to take pre-orders. So I pre-ordered it right away, first person in my city to do so xD
Im hoping Cata will be out this year, Im very excited for it, especially Goblins and all the changed content. But if it doesn't come out this year, I'm fine with that. Blizzard can take all the time they need if it means the expansion is going to be amazing.

Let me put it this way. Only Blizzard knows, except they don't yet. Also, people at corporate level don't communicate rumors down to the local level, at least if it's not a rumor involving the company.
Didn't Blizzard actually announce a release date for StarCraft: Ghost back in the day?

i dont see how it would be bad if the game was posponed for another few months. If blizz needs to delay the release, that just means the game has too many flaws. I would much rather have Blizz polish the game and come out with a good quality game than to just release a crap game.

Beta is still in a very early stage, the max level isn't available yet so Beta has a long way to go. It would't surprise me a 2011 release, but during the first two months (January and February) no longer than that. But something you brother heard is no confirmation, as you said it is a rumor. Nothing more.

Blizz said that the next major build for Cataclysm Beta will be released soon in a few weeks which will contain the max level, so it isn't that far.

That I didn't know. Still, at max level is where most of the testing needs to be focused. And with the new talent system a lot of balance will need to be made.
