Incest should be legalized

It may be disgusting to you, but if there is no reason for why it should be illegal, then it shouldn't be illegal.

I'm actually very two-sided on this debate, I think of it inherently as gross and know there is a reason for this, as everything, yet cannot find it, so I will not pick sides, only occasionally throw in biased or unbiased points.
I just wanted to point out that there is more evolutionary reason that incest is generally not accepted then because of heightened risk of mutation, but also so that we can develop a much greater gene-pool allowing for the best possible results in natural selection. Besides for the obvious genetic mutations, if we all have similar (but not necessarily
bad
) genetic codes, then if we have a disease that if fatal to one genetic code but completely ineffective against another, we need the diversity to ensure that we will not all simply die out because we all have one similar code that the disease would kill.

One could make the point that the reason it is thought of as inherently gross is because society has taught and raised people to think that. There have been many civilizations in the past where incest was accepted and it wasn't seen as a bad thing. Just look at the British monarchy (and many others throughout history, for that matter).
And there is incest all over the place in Greek mythology. Pretty much every god and every human descended from the gods is related to each other.

Society develops ideas for a reason. Someone had to come along and get to a society and they had to agree that it was teh grozz. They got it from somewhere. The idea that it was yucky originated somewhere.

But people still do stupid things all the time today. You can use that line of reasoning to justify every thing that is wrong with people in the world today.

Higher proneness to genetic deformities in offspring? That would probably do it.
Also - it's worth noting that spreading one's genetic code too far and diversifying too much will result in precisely the same problem - a single disease wiping out everybody, because we all share the same diversified gene pool.

By this reasoning, you could potentially condone the use of controlled substances. Society seems to have a notion that smoking is acceptable. However, it can cause a number of fatal diseases, as well as cancer. Alchohol as well, is accepted, but is fetal alchohol syndrome not a negative effect, along with liver damage? It is not illegal to drink while pregnant, yet this can result in defects, as incest can. Drinking while pregnant is a choice, and not illegal, incest (As Laihendi stated, between 2 lucid adults) is also a choice, but is. Defects, as I've said above can result from both.
I do not support incest, i find if gross. I just felt the need to shoot some holes in your reasoning :P
Sorry to shoot holes in your reasoning, but Orranis's comments were relating to why we consider it gross, and not to the legality of it. Personally, I find smoking and alcohol gross generally, and especially when used by pregnant women. :P

You seem to have misunderstood my point. I mean, general society's opinions of some things are warped.
I was referring to the fact that there are things in our society we percieve to be "Normal" are in fact harmful. (Ex. Why isn't it the mainstream belief that consumption of Alchohol/Tobacco/Drugs is gross/bad/dangerous)(Because in my opinion, they are.)
The difference is I can see, historically, how and why those things came to be. I don't see the point in which incest suddenly became yucky, or why that was.

It isn't the government's place to mess around with evolution, and what happens to the gene pool.

Incest is rarely, if ever, practiced in nature without extraordinary circumstances, making it illegal is just sticking it down on paper. Remember that ideas of government and law are also products of evolution within themselves.

Outlawing incest doesn't change the future of the species any more than outlawing murder.
Murder directly impacts someone else. Incest doesn't, any more than someone with HIV having a child does (which isn't banned).

Drug usage and alcohol abuse is rarely, if ever, practiced in nature without extraordinary circumstances, making it legal is... inconsistent?

The thing is that we don't have any creatures to relate to in terms of alcohol or drugs, which we do in incest. I'm only playing devil's advocate here, and I think we should first turn our attentions to much more pressing matters of the same idea such as gay marriage.

Laihendi agrees that there are more important laws that should be changed than incest laws, but to him it's just a no-brainer that the incest thing should be changed, and it's just an obvious example of the government overstepping its boundaries on an individual's freedom.
Since marriage is basically a legal contract, there is at least reason for debate about it, since it's not like the government is saying you can't be in a homosexual relationship, it's just saying it won't recognize that couple as a married couple... which to Laihendi is still wrong, but at least they aren't taking away freedom, they are just not granting a privilege that is given to everyone else.

Doesn't that just make it even more unnatural?
There are a few though - you can train rats to appreciate heroin and cocaine, and
they'll definitely abuse it when they think they can
.
I agree though - gay marriage is even less controversial than incest is. Laihendi does make a good point though, gay marriage comes with societal benefits to the couple.

ThiPeople generally have sex for pleasure and recreation, not for procreation.
Source?
If no source, how many people, who are having sex, have you interviewed?
