First, let me say that I think of ganking as killing someone you know has no chance to successfully fight back. Maybe they're a good many levels lower than you or they just got out of a tough fight or some other circumstance. But when you start the fight, you're almost guaranteed to be victorious (and if you don't win, it's usually to someone else showing up to help the opponent or your computer freezes up for a second).
My question is, why do it in the first place? I honestly don't see the fun in it. To me, it seems like 6th graders going around picking on 1st graders, or soldiers firing upon enemy combatants that are wounded and can't defend themselves. And I realize this is just a game, but I think that's what makes ganking even more confusing to me; nobody (that I know) enjoys dying, especially in a circumstance where they've no real chance to fight back. If I enjoy this game, wouldn't I want others to enjoy it as well? Maybe it's the way my parents raised me or the values the military tried to teach/brainwash me with when I was in, but I honestly just don't understand the point to this action. And no, I'm not trying to start any sort of flame war (those are just as pointless to me) or anything like that; this is pure curiosity on my part. Thanks.I highly doubt the military tried to brainwash you with any values concerning not attacking a wounded enemy combatant. We drop bombs on enemy hospitals, we don't ignore them till the enemy can hold a rifle or rocket launcher again and is trying to use it on us before finishing them off.
That being said, most of us don't like dying when we don't have a chance. What we do like is playing with the added danger that anyone could attack us at anytime, but if you don't WoW has made PvE ruleset servers just for the people that feel the same as you.

First, my original post wasn't an attack on people that make ganking a normal thing for them. It seems like some people took it that way. All I wanted to know is why do it; I'm not even asking for people to justify their reasons.
Second, for everyone that says "just go PvE", you're living in a small world. Some people play this game for the social aspect, just switching servers isn't something they want to jump up and do. Plus there's a cost associated with server switching and while you may not feel $25 is a bit much to pay for said service, I for one can think of better ways to spend that money. Nor do I feel like abandoning the characters I put so much time into and starting over on a new server.
As for the person saying our military bombs hospitals (this is assuming you're a US citizen and referring to the US military), I'm gonna ask you look up a little thing called the Geneva Conventions. While we are in no way perfect, the US military has done a remarkable job of adhering to those conventions. Yeah, some individual jerks get into the service and make it a point to ignore these rules, but they get caught (usually by a fellow soldier that turns them in).
