Starting WoW Again - Server Issue :(

I've been playing WoW on and off since vanilla and I recently stopped when I was about half way cleared Ulduar25, month or two after it was released, because I was on a server with no RL friends, which can become boring at times. I'm EST time zone, and have
always
played on PvP realms.
Well I find out all my RL friends came back but 1) They're on a PvE realm and 2) It's PST (they're also all EST).
I know PvE isn't that much different, just no world-pvping unless flagged, but my concern is playing 3-hours ahead. I'm guessing everything starts according to PST time, so prime-time would be ~9PM EST? Does anyone do this and find it easy to manage? I also read up that the server they're on is in the LA datacluster; I'd imagine with me and all my friends, living in maryland, that there will be lag? No?
I have that itch to come back and catch up with raids/gear/etc but it would require me to $-xfer my chars and I don't want to do that if I'm stuck on a server with lag and stuff. Any suggestions or first-hand experiences?

Its not too difficult, you just have to make sure that you figure out the time difference and act accordingly when planning raids.
And I'm getting no lag in basically the same situation as you, so you should be good =D

Yeah the time zone I don't see being a huge deal - may be kind of annoying that raids will typically start at like 8-9PM EST though...
I do recall playing on a LA datacenter server (still in Maryland) and there being a lot of lag sometimes. That was awhile ago though. Maybe I'll start my 7-day trial I have and make a char on their server and see if the lag is bad at all.
EDIT:
I pinged the last-hop of the LA datacenter and my closest data center and there was a difference of 65ms (LA: 87ms, Boston: 22ms). Will that be a noticeable difference or will I notice any lag?

I'm on the east coast and play on a CST server but the servers are in the Seattle data center. My latency is usually around 130ms with the latency fix and I don't really notice any lag at all. If I use an east coast server my latency is usually around 30ms. I do wish I had gone with an EST server when I started, sometimes it's hard when everyone is starting raiding later than I am able to.

This the fix you speak of?

The general rule of thumb is that lag is typically experienced when you are over 200ms latency or over 2-3% packet loss. If you dont have either of those, you really shouldnt feel laggy.
I keep getting mixed replies. I've posted this on another forum and got told (from someone in VA playing on LA server) that lag isn't bad but in raids or dalaran the lag can get terrible. Obviously ISP is a variable though.
