So I Got Hacked

I genuinely have no idea how I got hacked, but I did.
I was at a friend's house playing a card game Friday night, and I get a text from a WoW friend asking me why I was in Nexus. I initially figured that either (1) she was just messing around, or (2) was mistaken, as I knew she had recently changed servers, so I was thinking maybe she just saw someone with the same character name.
Unfortunately, she was on the server I knew her from, and my druid was, in fact, in Nexus. Then it was in WG, and then it went to a bunch of the newer content. I don't refer to this newer content by name seeing as I quit last October. I never saw the last major content patch released, and I haven't seen the new raid or even the new party making system thingy.
After managing to recover both my Battle.net account password and email password, I let Blizzard know using their form that my account had been compromised. At this point, my account is active and I'm downloading WotLK again to login and see how much damage has been done.
All I know is that I'm really angry. Somehow this must've been my fault, right? It's violating.
What should I do from here? There is literally a long lapse in activity on my account. Blizzard should be able to revert any changes made to my account and characters, right?
How can I make sure I don't get hacked again? (In my defense, I'm not exactly stupid when it comes to the internet. I don't give out information people don't need, and I don't click suspicious links.) What programs should I use to protect myself in the future? I'm formatting my PC as we speak (I'm on my recently formatted as of last night laptop right now) and want to know what anti virus I should get, if any.

Avira Antivirus
Secunia PSI
COMODO Firewall

Spybot S&D
SnoopFree Privacy Shield (if running WinXP)
BlueGem Keystroke Encryption

I can't really say why this has happened to you, but well, I'm constantly worried that this will happen to me. I haven't played in a month, but the scam emails I get almost every single day always give me a small scare wherever there's a new one...

If you quit wow, and your account was off...... i smell troll...
my nephew who is 15 years old and goes to school quit wow for when class started again yet still when we tried to loging again in summer vacation his account had been linked with a B.net account and the password was changed.
Luckly we where able to get his account back and none of his chars was deleted (even the hackers got my nephew main Paladin 58 to 450 mining and left the bank full of saronite and titanium ore)

Really if your account was suspended theyd have to have all your personal information to reactivate your account, and then somehow change a payment method, hack your email, all while you not knowing..... i dont buy it.
I was hacked the same way. I was not playing the game and my account was suspended. It was a couple months after I stopped playing that it was hacked. I did not find out until about 8 months later when I tried to return to the game but could not because my password wasn't working. Got on my guild website and found out that during the time I was not playing my guildies had seen my toon running around farming and they tried to talk to me and got no answer and realized it wasn't me and kicked me from the guild to protect the guild. That is when I contacted Blizz about my account and they determined that my account had infact been compromised. After taking the steps Blizzard required I got my account back.
So I am not sure how this happened either unless I was actually "hacked" earlier but the hacker just held on to the information and used it later on. This was last year pre-authenticator.

If there was a keylogger on his account and he had no authenticator, all the "hacker" had to do was provide a method of payment. Blizzard doesn't store your payment method information (i.e., credit card info) if you cancel your account. And his information could have been keylogged months before the "hacker" tried to use it.

I'm starting to smell an inside job, honestly. Perhaps there's someone in billing who's specifically targeting these inactive accounts in order to make some money on the side? I seem to hear a lot about people leaving the game for a bit and then discovering their accounts are inaccessible when they try to come back.
Yea, yea, conspiracy theory. But don't tell me it's not possible.

And yes Hackers will hold on to your info for a while before using it.
Gold selling is a very profitable business for a lot of hackers and like any commodities business you hunt down future sources of revenue and then keep an eye on them until you have a buyer and are ready to cash in. Thats how they can guarantee gold delivery within 2 hours on any server and for any amount you care for
If they stumble across an account thats gone inactive I'm sure they'll put it to work as a mule or a bank for when they have to launder gold or items from other hacked accounts
Thats exactly what happened with my account. I left the game with low level mining and blacksmithing. When I returned after my account was reinstated I had 450 mining and 450 herbalism. There was also a bunch a new tunes on a bunch of different servers. I checked these new tunes and most were GM and I checked their guild banks and in the money logs there were literally tens of thousands of gold transactions. Of course there was no gold left in any of them.
The only good thing was that I left the game in BC before Wrath came out but when I got my account back the hacker had added the new Wrath to my account so he could do his bidding so that saved me $30.

I was hacked a month ago. Ended up being the best thing that happened to me, cancelled
my account and have not even got a new password from Blizz. Helps you go cold turkey
and actually quit the game.
