Enhancement question... dropping totems

I looked around and couldn't find any threads on this topic so I figured I'd ask.
I finally got around to leveling my Shaman, and plan on going enhancement once I hit 80 (currently level 64). My question is how often should I be dropping my totems while running heroics and or dungeons?
I kinda figured that with how fast trash die in dungeons and heroics that the benefits from dropping totems on every trash pull is fairly minimal and other than magma and the occasional tremor/cleansing when appropriate, is kind of pointless. But earlier I had a pally telling me that since I'm a Shaman I should be dropping totems on every pull and when i mentioned how much a mana drain it is his solution was giving me BoW and calling me a nub. I know we have Shamanistic Rage, but in many runs we usually go through 3 or 4 pulls before the cooldown wears off and with how much a mana drain totems can be I really can't afford the mana.
So am I being a nub for not dropping totems while fighting trash? And should I start throwing down totems for trash?

Garnzel,
As a raid leader and a long time shaman, you will find two common thoughts. One is that shamans should always drop totems. The other is that unless the fight lasts longer than 20 seconds it's not worth it to drop totems. Here are my thoughts on the whole process.
1. In heroics, if you are enhance, don't drop your totems unless you are in an undergeared group, and the trash will stay up for awhile. Save them for boss fights. If you are ele or resto, drop them all the time.
2. In raids, you drop your totems for every pull. All the time
3. Most shamans will drop them regardless of spec just so they are always in the habit of dropping them during raids and boss encounters. Anything that makes dps better will make the run faster. What I would do to speed up while dpsing heroics is drop my totems just past the trash so that I can go 2-3 pulls depending on heroic before dropping again.
If someone complains about no totems, just drop them, and keep going. If it's a ret pali tell him that if he wants you to drop totems, than he needs to give you Might and judge wisdom then you can drop totems ;p. This will offset the mana cost marginally, never get BoW unless you are in a raid it's nowhere near as good for you as might or kings.

If I'm not going to miss a GCD while at the target, I drop them. It's not like mana is an issue here.

Playing as a Resto Enhancement Shaman i'm often beset by lazy Shamans who can't be bothered to drop totems until bosses. "But you don't need to!" they say, sitting at 100% mana, not wanting to spand a GCD that would justify itself. Shamans who drop them every pull are much nicer to run with I think.

I have no idea what you are talking about.
1. I am a Resto Shaman so my totems are always down. I have a large mana supply so there is never a need for me not to drop them.
2. Enhance shamans have a smaller mana supply so there is generally no purpose to dropping them on trash for a span of 20 seconds. If they last a bit longer than drop them.
3. By save for the boss, I meant and probably should have been clearer. YOU SHOULD DROP THEM ON THE BOSS NO MATTER WHAT.
I have no idea what you are talking about in terms of cooldowns.

Actually I usually drop them when playing enhance (infinite mana with SR and I have to drop magma anyway, might as well do all 4) while I didn't when starting out as resto (mana issues, dropping totems every trash meant drinking before the boss which is a waste of time).
Of course all those mana issues disappear with gear but since the OP is just lvl 64 I guess they are still very much relevant for him.
