Arena Rating Question

So I've been doing some 2's with a guildmate, and we've noticed something that we think is pretty peculiar. Whenever we face a team with a higher rating than us and win (our MMR is at 1200 or so, and their rating being 1300 something) we only gain about 8 - 15 points. When we lose against a team like that, we're losing anywhere from 4 - 10 points. That in itself seems about right that we would gain more points than lose against a team with a higher rating.
The confusion sets in when we start paying attention to the points they gain when they win. If we lose to a team rated around the 1300's (keep in mind we're still talking about us being in the mid 1200's) they win a ridiculous amount of points, somewhere upwards of 40 sometimes. I've seen gains of up to 48 points.
Now that's fine and all, but why do we get less points for winning against a higher rated team than they get for winning against us?
Also, according to the wowwiki, the maximum point gain for a match in any given circumstances should be 32. Now I don't know if that number has been changed or whatnot, but I guess it's irrelevant for my actual question.
Not that it's a big deal, but if there's anything we could do to help the situation it'd be great. I'm not worried about minimizing opponents gains, simply maximizing ours.
I know it's probably just something funky with the calculations or whatever, but I'm still curious, so any comments/clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, that makes a lot sense and actually answered what I was planning to ask o. o
Still... sometimes feels bogus when you win a tight match against good players with a much higher MMR and you only get 7 rating and they lose 0.

They may be low-rated, high-MMR teams. The MMR system will act very aggressively point-wise to try to get teams to the bracket it thinks they belong in. So if you're playing a team that just started and the actual TR is say, 700, and their MMR is 1300, they could conceivably get huge amounts of points from beating you, because the MMR system is trying to get them to 1300 as quickly as possible.
Their MMR is higher than yours, and they beat you, so the system assumes its estimation of where they belong (1300) is correct, and gives them a bunch of points to get their TR closer to that rating.
What's your TR?
Ah, that makes sense then. We're rated at 1248 right now. It's our first season in Arena so we're still learning the ropes, but I think we're doing okay so far.

I agree. It's like, "Phew, what a hard fought victo... OH COME ON 7 POINTS?".
Become very framiliar with what this seasons weapons look like, and if you encounter a team where one person is holding them CC that person and lean HARD on the other. The one without the weapons is the one paying for a carry to 1800, and alot more apt to make stupid mistakes.
Thank you very much for that tip. I'll start doing so. :)

The team rating is somewhat insignificant nowadays until you hit your ceiling, that is: your MMR (Matchmaking Rating). Your MMR is what the game decides what caliber you and your team play at. If your TR is 1248 right now, and your MMR is at 1800, don't worry about the point gains/losses, if you keep playing consistently, the game will make sure your TR meets your MMR eventually.
Just focus on fixing your strategies after every loss, and as you get better and learn more strategies, your MMR will also raise, and your TR will follow.

Take with a grain of salt. Speaking as a player who carries people to 1800 in 2s for gold, we always go into games with the mindset that we're the ones who are going to be CC'd, and our partners are going to be the focus targets. This means they'll be fully prepared to LOS your sheeps, Trinket blinds, blink away from fears, and straight up out CC you.
In fact, sometimes it's probably better to focus the person doing the carrying, because their scrub partner will oft be too undergeared/skilled to peel or assist in any adequate manner.

I actually considered that fact today. That it might be easier to 2v1 the guy who actually knows what he's doing while his partner runs around going "AHHHH!".
I don't think we've run into any of those teams yet, and if we have we sure haven't noticed.
We seem to be consistently moving up every week, but now that I've said that we'll probably drop 100 points the next time we play xD. I've learned to keep my mouth shut about our rating gains/losses until the end of the current session lest I jinx us.
Thanks for the tips and info guys. Much appreciated.
(Also thankful that nobody said "LOL 1200 NUBS", so thanks. :) )
