For one, If you run a private Vent server, you can only have a maximum of 8 users free. That is, if you host the server yourself. The host and server software must be turned on at all times for everyone to access Ventrilo. The most difficult issue comes with your ISP. Most Internet Service Providors restrict use like this. You may be able to run the software on your computer, but no one else can access it. The ISP might block it. Also if they find you circumventing their restriction, they (a) charge you for that service, or (b) sue you for a breach of contract. In other words, you may need to upgrade your Internet Service Package also.
Its best to pay another service to host it.
Take a look here:

While i very much prefer Vent, i am forced to use TeamSpeak since that is completely free. Vent is much easier and very user friendly. The Permissions on Vent are much simpler than Teamspeak. If you financially can afford a monthly fee, then Ventrilo is the way to go. Otherwise, turn to TeamSpeak.

Teamspeak 3 has gotten much better in the ways of being user friendly. Permissions are much better and allow for more control over who can do what.

I agree, it has changed in the past year. But permissions are still extremely confusing. TS does not even have a real Help or Manual. It took me 45 minutes to figure out how to mute everyone that moves into a certain channel. I still have yet to figure out how to prevent users, other than Admins, from moving to certain rooms.
I feel the TS security is like a Windows Registry. It may be there, but takes time to find it and you have no clue what your looking for until you find it.

Typefrag is horrible. They canceled our server we were on without warning. Watch out the owner is a creep. David Gramper AKA Grinch.
They had an agreement written and typefrag did not honor it.

Mumble
is far superior to either TeamSpeak or Ventrilo; Mumble's sound quality is crystal clear, and it offers tricks the others do not, such as automatically adjusting a speaker's volume on the fly.
You could use the Murmur server if you wish, but there a plenty of host servers out there without setting up your own.
I have also tried RaidCall. I'm not sure what to make of it. Better quality than Ventrilo, but not as good as Mumble. 100% free servers (client, like Mumble, Ventrilo, TeamSpeak, is free), but there is not enough control of the client. It does all the settings automatically, and while you can do some config, it is minor. RaidCall seems to be a work in progress, with everybody using it effectively a beta tester.
