I'm Destro, and I can definitely tell that SoC is better. As in, it kills stuff faster. Even though I burn through the mana like crazy.
However, there are still some situations where RoF is "better." Such as, one room in Utgarde, which is full of spiders, and webbed individuals. SoC has a blast-radius of 15 yards, and so it's very easy for things to get out of control in tight confines like those. If SoC opens some of those wriggling webbed cocoons, then you could be responsible for bringing some adds to the fight.
I've had some similar situations in Icecrown Citadel. Someone was trying to CC one of the larger trash-mobs, and SoC was just not tightly controlled enough. (The guild decided they would have to separate the CC-mob farther away from the ones being killed, to allow me my full damage potential)
I also use RoF when in "easy mode", helping some lowbies out with a dungeon. Or, when the Tank in a PUG isn't well skilled or geared to be a Tank. This because, SoC can very quickly gain you a ton of aggro. Otherwise, that's pretty much it.
And so, in limited situations like that, I have resorted to RoF still. (Which allows more fine control for where you want to do damage, and where you don't, in crowded areas) On general terms, SoC is much, much better. Only in limited circumstances -- where you are willing to do less damage -- is RoF still preferred.
--Edit--
One thing about Seed of Corruption? You will want to have some keys or mouse-buttons bound to target selection. (Closest Target, Next Target) I have these on my mouse. I first rotate targets, to drop curses (and allow my Tank to better solidify his aggro, after some mishaps) And then, I start rotating targets, and casting SoC as quickly as possible, on one mob after another. A haste trinket I have allows me to get off several Seeds of Corruption very quickly. If I time it well enough, they will chain-explode, and the mobs will go down very quickly. Especially, if anyone else is using AoE attacks on them. Much of the time, depending upon the type of mobs, my Tank, and my fellow DPS players' AoE abilities, I don't even drop curses.
Just be careful that, in your target rotation, you don't accidentally target a mob which isn't part of the pull. (A mob which your group is CC'ing, or which isn't currently being attacked) I've done that, a few times. I've since learned to position myself a certain distance and angle, so that I can only target the pack we're currently attacking, with SoC. And I watch to make sure that the red circle on the floor (under my newly selected target) isn't across the room, somewhere else, and is within the pack I'm trying to kill. Rain of Fire is definitely MUCH simpler. It just doesn't top the DPS charts anymore. Pity... it's definitely prettier.
I've gotten good enough with SoC, in recent weeks, that I can judge when to stop tossing out SoC, and start lifetapping back to full mana, before they all go down. (I often try to lifetap, once in awhile, in between SoC castings... especially, when I'm getting a bit high on the threat meter.) And then, sometimes only one or two mobs are left, and you can burn them down with a quick Immolate. (Or, the entire single-target spell rotation, if they're a bit tougher)

In addition to the good post that Onijitsu posted, there are still quite a number of times when Rain of Fire is still the better aoe to use. It's much quicker, and doesn't depend on other people damaging the targets. One great example is for Rot Worms against Valithria. The cast time and flight time of SoC makes for, usually, wasted mana and wasted DPS time against them, but they are still #2 priority to kill. Rain of Fire is great here.

well, after playing a resto druid i can honestly say that any healer who thinks it's an issue needs to adjust their thinking.

stupid dps is stupid dps. that's got nothing to do with LTs.
i LT to full mana after each fight. if the healers don't want to heal the health back (or are drinking themselves) then of course i'll eat/bandage myself. i would, however, lose respect for any healer who avoided healing LTs on principle.
i am not a stupid DPSer. i manage my taps very carefully. a single rejuve/renew (etc.) is not a lot to ask.

I try to Life Tap from time to time, to maintain my mana, and to help prevent one Giant Life Tapping Session 'O Near-Death at the end. But Life Tap has a little bit of an extra delay (much like Conflagrate becoming available... it must also wait for the server to acknowledge the Life Tap action?) that can be quite annoying.
I also went from massive Life Tap sessions at the end of a pull, to frequent Life Tapping. Which, cut my DPS significantly, and didn't help as much in the end. (Not only did my DPS go down, but my efficiency as a killer went down too)
And, I realized that these small increments of Life Tapping might also be less heal-worthy for many of my Healers. I have tried to better compromise... Doing a great deal of damage, then Life Tapping a few times, and then resuming my damage spree. Better DPS. Better Healing responses, in general. Happier teams.

You can life tap from zero to full using only half your health bar, so I don't really see how players can be life tapping to almost dead unless they are doing it while taking damage or while at half health.
This, only if you are Affliction with Improved Life Tap, and maybe Demon Armor on? So, you're only talking about 1/3 of the potential Warlock specs out there.
We Destro and Demo locks have to Life-Tap too.
-----------------------------------
A few questions for the Sages of Warlockery:
1. Seed of Corruption - does it crit, when you are not Affliction-spec'd? I've tried to watch more carefully, in a dungeon setting, but it's not entirely been easy to determine. It does seem like SoC does crit, when I'm in Destro, but I wanted to run this by you guys. I realize that Afflictolocks get improved crits, at the very least. (Which makes me wonder if there would ever be any value to dropping some points into Improved Corruption, as anything other than Affliction. Yes I know. Please don't smack me. I just think about these things)
2.
WOWwiki's information on SoC
is obviously a little bit old.... but it reports that Seed of Corruption
"is inferior to Hellfire when dealing with large groups (like around fifteen or even more mobs).
" Does this hold true at all?
3. I still don't quite understand the change to AoE spells, recently... Basically, you can't collect up a ton of mobs -- or enemies in Battlegrounds -- and AoE them down, en masse, right? There is some sort of mechanic which reduces your returns on larger groups?

Area-of-Effect Damage Caps: We've redesigned the way area damage is capped when hitting many targets. Instead of a hard cap on total damage done, the game now caps the total damage done at a value equal to the damage the spell would do if it hit 10 targets. In other words, a spell normally hits each target for 1000 damage. With 3 targets, the multiplier is 1, so it doesn't change. Same with 10 targets. With 20 targets, the multiplier is 10/20=0.5. So, it hits for 0.5*1000=500.
