As a Holy Pally on festergut, when one of our new players got the spore and thus one of the three groups missed it. I'm assigned a different aura, I switch to shadow resistance right before the expunge and pop aura mastery. Bam, that group survives.
From what I understand,
5/5/52+9
is pretty much the cookie cutter for Ret (I play holy though), you're looking at 6 more points to get AM or 12 more to get Imp DS. 12 > 9, thus you'd have to sacrifice for it. The 30% on the base spell is group only - not party only - and unless used with a shield will likely kill yourself in the process if it's worth popping in the first place. On my holy spec, I only pop this with a macro to disable the 30% group absorbtion, to get the 20% raid damage buff up.

Divine Sacrifice when used on its own doesn't actually reduce damage at all. It just moves some of it around to you. And if you take Divine Guardian, you have to lose a lot of points that would contribute to DPS.
Aura Mastery also has a larger range, shorter cooldown, and better mitigation than DiGuard anyway. It's less points for a better CD.

I'd say
5/5/55+6
, but that's of little consequence.
What does matter is that you will take Vindication if there is not a paladin tank, you will not take Imp BoM if there is another paladin with it, you will not take swift retribution if there is a Boomkin in the raid.

Divine Guardian (20% less damage to the raid) is a lot better even on an encounter where Aura Mastery is useful (single school of magic damage affected by an Aura), so AM is mostly worthless on Rotface (two schools), Deathbringer (no magic), and Putricide (nature damage). I do AM Ret aura on those three encounters to add like 0.1% more damage to the tank ;). However as you said, a Ret spending 17 points in Prot for PvE is a very, very bad idea.
I have had Aura Mastery since Sindragosa was released because it become so useful then. I always raid with at least one other Paladin, so he/she runs Devo and I do the Resist Aura that applies to that encounter.
