The same ignorance that your friends expressed is the reason Bears seem to be fading. Luckily, the skilled / knowledgeable ones are sticking around, so in reality I think this will just serve to weed out the dummies (a welcome purge from the recent influx Cat form has brought us).
Bears are fine. Your friends are ignorant about Druids, as is most of the game's populace. The only motivation at this point for choosing a warrior/pally/DK over a druid is that you won't have to deal with this ignorance every time you pug something.

I've rarely (if ever) seen a bear pugging (going all the way back to BC). Aside from VoA anyway. My experience was that the demand for (good) bears has always exceeded the supply of bears. Add in that trees are hands down the best raid healers (sorry holy priests) so more druids have gone tree and you just don't find many pugging.

If you're spec is fine, you'll be fine, however, easiest way to gear an offspec now is to farm emblems with your main spec. Full T9 + whatever drops = 2k+ wow-heroes GS in a couple of weeks, letting you start raiding quickly.
Yeah, and you should also look at craftable items. The 245 level leather is pretty sweet, and not too expensive to have made (with triumph badges raining from the sky for the Crusader Orbs).
Edit: Almost forgot, the Triumph badge non-tier shoulders (also 245) are great for tanking. Use head, chest, hands and legs for your t9, and the 245 non-tier shoulds and you'll be fine.

odd... I vaguely remember this thread.... Can't find it on searches tho, but it was somewhere around 3.1ish timeframe....
I've been pugging like crazy for emblems, and TBH, heroics are a joke for bears. I had a paladin literally falling asleep healing me thru Pit of Soran. We wiped 3 times because of it. I start taking damage, and he's imprinting his keyboard to his face. >.<
But, bear tanks are usually not pugging because they are typically raid tanking. As said above, they are the "go to" tank for progression typically.
As far as threat goes, I think this is funny. I had one VoA 25 last night, had a DK tank that was pushing 8-12k TPS regularly, and us offtanks couldn't out aggro him after taunts... Then, after that raid failed, I joined another, and a DK with the same HP/GS couldn't pump more than 6-8k tps max.... Very odd.

Bear tanks are alive and well. I play my bear tank and love it.
I think that druids diversity also lends itself to each tree seeming to be under-represented. Since druids are excellant at all the archtypes yet are generally not a huge portion of the class breakdown it would seem that bears are far and few between.

a properly timed rebirth has saved me many wipes.
For those not in the know, a well timed battle ress is one cast when one of your party members is dead. Trying to do so when everyone is alive may even cause a wipe, so its ironic really.
I've pulled off Battle res's while tanking in progression raids. It's pretty funny actually. =)
I've done it a few times when the MT dies and no one has a B-res off CD.
