If you were to take a protection paladin, decked out in ICC gear only, into a PvP situation,
how
would you fare?
Fixed. Also, prot PvP was pretty big a few patches back, a fellow guild managed to convince me to give it a go. And yes, it is possible but not as good as it was before.

Are you talking about running around in tanking gear?
If so, Trolls is right (sortof). Stack BV and block rating - you'll hit the BV cap for Shield of Righteousness, but any extra BV is extra mitigation, and with the ilvl of gear these days, you can probably be unhittable without Holy Shield, thereby making you practically invulnerable to blockable attacks from the front. 4k mitigation coming *after* armour mitigation and damage reduction is a wonderful thing, plus you'll still have Sacred Shield in the bank.
Of course, you won't be able to kill anyone who can heal themselves, at all.

Not 100% true. I can kill a ret pally pretty easily as prot, and DKs also (though it's a bit harder because it's easier for them to heal themselves). But that's absolutely true vs any type of healer. Prot lacks the burst to take them down.
Ret pally's being too aggressive then, and not using Flash of Light. A Ret pally should be able to run through his rotation and Flash of Light on each AoW proc, and will stay alive forever against a Prot pally, with Sacred Shield up, especially if he uses Repentance as a healing opportunity.
Edit: He still won't win, because the Prot Pally can do just that as well. He just has no real excuse for losing to a tank-geared Prot pally, as opposed to a Protribution pally.

Personally i prefer prot pvp with pvp gear, I tried it with pve gear and its just not cricket against anyone with resil (yes there are bored loaded up pvpers running around bg's with relentless gear and full arp gems... they will skin you alive without pvp gear).
Personally i found the pvp gear to provide a much better survival rate with which you can slowly eat away at someone and when healers see you can stand strong they tend to stick close to you if your smart enough to cc those that attack them.
In the end its good fun with both pve and pvp gear but in the long run to be a serious threat to the other team you will need at least 600 odd resil.
