It's not elitism for a healer to think they're better or more important than someone's pet; we're more important than that same someone, that's just common sense.

I haven't seen many tank healers comment on this, but here is why it's so difficult:
In challenging content, some bosses can take a tank out with two hits. With a two second swing timer this means that as a tank healer you potentially have two seconds to land a
big
heal on your tank to avoid a wipe at any given moment.
Holy paladins don't attempt to go for the haste soft cap; the theorycrafting just says it isn't worth it with Light's Grace and Seals of the Pure. We literally
do not
have time to not being pre-casting HL bombs and canceling them at the last tenth of a second with the amount of haste we bother to stack.
This is all about healers with one assignment. Granted, it's the hardest one in the raid, but still,
one person
.
This is why, while in theory I realize there is a point at which I may heal your pet, because it is theoretically on my list somewhere, I never actually will.
Saying that 'but my pet is on that list
somewhere
, why don't you ever bother healing it?' shows you don't realize how precious tenths of a second are to a healer in difficult progression content.
This is all about progression content, though. You really should as a healer be saving a Hunter the trouble and just throwing something on their pet once in a while on a farm raid. It is your job after all. Although letting an idiot DPS who fails to avoid AOEs consistently die is allowable, so letting a hunter's pet that the hunter is too dumb to manage die is also certainly understandable.

My shaman cameo's as restoration on the odd instance/boss fight. Unless the pet is tanking or we aren't in combat, it will never receive a direct heal from me. Never. Not even if its 2 seconds away from dying. However, it will still be healed. Splash healing from chain heal (if the pet is in the right spot) and Ancestral Awakening procs will give the pet some heals.
If these "smart" heals aren't enough to keep your pet alive, then why is it standing in the "fire"?

There are pets in raids now? I hadn't noticed.
I never heal pets in raids, mostly because I don't notice them and I have more important things to do. In 5 mans I do if I have time.
Why do some hunters send in their pet if the mob/boss is standing in some bad stuff? Pet dies in 2 secs and the scream at you for not healing the poor pet.

How are hunters asking a healer to *gasp* heal being selfish? But yeah, I agree, I'm astounded with the amount of selfish prima donas I've seen post in this thread....
He wasn't talking about raids (which most of the rest of you are), he was talking about groups. And quite honestly, most healers I run with just /afk through the run.
There is a feeling that all they "need" to do is heal the tank, and if the tank is staying up, then they shouldn't be required to do anything else.
I'm relatively sure that's the mindset the OP is referring to.
When a hunter joins the group, and flat out gets told that his pet will not get healed, that's a lazy healer. If the healer says that he will try to heal the pet when he can, that's a healer that's actually trying.
No one expects a healer to heal a pet over someone else, but outside of raids a healers GCDs are rarely full up.
Heck, I'll even FoL hunter pets when I go ret on my pally.

you believe I ... know how to dps
Who said?:D
Ive read through this funny thread and Im gonna share some experience of a pally healer.
In groups:
Pets do rarely take enough damage to die, unless whole party takes a lot of damage because of bad pull and aggro-fest. Newertheless, I always drop a heal on the pets, its just the problem that their party frame is so small and it takes extra effort (and it something Im not used to) to watch their health. The priority player > pets is common, but as long as there is a free GCD, theres no reason to not heal the pet.
Of course, in those fights like BK p3 or Loken in HoL, Im sorry.
At BK, your pet will never get the marked for death debuff, so I just relly on judgement and HoL aoe glyph.
At Loken, well, if I knew which players are going to run out of nova and which not, and if I could trust they are realy going to do that right, then yes, I could spare a GCD. But usualy I have to ignore the pet.
In raids:
I have never ever healed the pet. Theres judgement, theres glyph aoe, thats all. Any class with aoe heals will heal the pet as long as the AI allows that, but will not aim the heal directly to them. Get used to it, manage your pet and dont let it die.
Have fun.

I love the logic of some of the huntards here. "HEAL MY PET OR I KILL YOU!" so to speak, in that the person would deliberately let the healer die if his pet isn't healed. These people must be like, the best raiders evar!

I've already got 25 health bars to watch, now I've got to find a place on my screen for everybody's dog, too? So there's a checkbox for pets. Great. Now my eyes have to sort through all the imps, ghouls, and shadowfiends for the two lions that might be worth a Flash of Light while the boss is being yelled at by Arthas. This will definitely improve the raid's survivability thanks to the extra 2k dps, all of our wipes occur due to hitting hard enrages at <1%.
Again, why are we talking about raids here when the OP was about groups?
