And if we are lucky, we won't get any more posts, either.

Look at Google. One of the most frequented sites in the world, they could make obscene income by simply putting an ad (of whatever size) right on their front page. But they don't. why? simply, the fact that they don't makes it look official.
One of the main reason why I like wowhead so much, and the only reason why the ad was a little shocking. Although, once again,
not
offensive.

I don't care if fullpage ads are run on the front page (probably generates good revenue, makes sense)
I don't care if they advert Warhammer, or any other mmo.
I do care if said ads overlap links, next time try to make sure it's chivvied down or the links are better protected :) Was a bit of an issue on Greenbrowser and as we've seen for Firefox, I can see it not being messed with on green since thats not as common of a browser but theres not really an excuse for firefox setups as thats quite common.
Not throwing a hissy or anything, just a suggestion mostly :)

IS THAT SUPPOSE TO BE AN ORC?
Off-topic but yeah, it's actually supposed to be the orc model that inspired Warcraft.
I hope this starts a fanboi war. This thread is getting dull.

I haven't played War but if that lousy drawn Orc and Dwarf are supposed to promote the game, then I don't wanna know how the game really looks like. I can draw better than that joke of an Orc.

I'd just like to add two things to address this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porter_5_forces_analysis
http://www.amazon.com/Dont-Make-Me-Think-Usability/dp/0321344758
On the marketing end:
Yes, the site's free. So's switching to another site. What's to keep people here? There's no monetary commitment either way. No business loses its complete consumer base with just one mistake, it takes several.
Sure, it was only a few people who said they wouldn't be coming back to Wowhead. Let's apply a bit of "theorycrafting" to that. Let' just say that the number of people who stop coming to Wowhead is only 1%. Not a large amount. Now take that 1% of all of Wowhead's
page views
, 1,080,000 fewer pages visits, and think of yourself as the advertiser looking to pay to have your ad placed up on Wowhead.
If you see that Wowhead is losing 1 million page views within 24 hours, you're definitely going to reconsider either the amount you're going to pay, or even advertising with the site at all. Not a good situation for Wowhead and its advertising based revenue.
The proposed solution:
If you're going to have ads, ask your advertising base what they'd like to see before you accidentally alienate them. There's a link up right now for an interview, so how hard can it be to have one of "What advertisements would you like to see on the front page?" Otherwise, paying more attention to your advertising demographics is key to avoid losing that potential revenue. Perhaps two skyscraper ads to the left and right, respectively, of the page instead?
On the web design end:
The ad was large and jarring when compared to the black, largely empty background the site usually has. Several people have already said in this thread that it took them a few seconds to realize they were on Wowhead. The misspelling reflects on the site hosting the ad and can lower its credibility. Not good for a site dependent on how reliable its information is. It was a complete change of consistency from the usual page layout. Imagine Google suddenly having whole-page ads in the background instead of its default white color.
The proposed solution:
The ad should have at least been in a container to keep it from interfering with the layout it's being laid under. Place it "3 em" down for the "margin-top" so that it's dynamically placed below elements of the navigation, just as you have a "margin-bottom" of the same measurement for the "footer" of each page. Consistently having an ad of the same size would prevent people from being so surprised by further ads, but Wowhead risks being accused of "selling out" even further. Instead of a whole page, perhaps smaller sections of the front page consistently advertising instead.
