Wow, those diagrams on WoWWiki are TERRIBLE. To go bosskillers.com and look at the Sarth page and you will get a great feeling for how the positioning should be and how it is affected by the flame walls.
And no, tanks shouldn't take flame walls. Once you start doing attempts with Drakes up, extra damage is bad and a raid wiper.

Just tank her where she stands initially, just rotate her right 90 degrees. That ensures the ranged fire wave to miss you (you don't have to move) completely. You only have to move slightly to your left once the melee fire wave comes. They move pretty slowly and you don't have to move much. I don't get why some people (esp dps) get hit by the wave. It moves so slowly.

Actually, the WoWwiki diagrams are fine. In fact, the Bosskiller diagrams are outdated I believe because they have sartharion tanked on that island which I believe cannot be done anymore.
Yes the diagrams aren't pretty, but they get the point across.
Those ASCII diagrams on WoWWiki look like something out of an Atari game. I can't see what's what on those things.
Bosskillers actually uses an image of the island. It's not outdated. When I tank Sarth /w Drakes I position Sarth there but have him facing south instead of north. I have seen a DPS hanging out on that island before, so it's not out of bounds.
I guess my problem with the WoWWiki diagram is that it shows 3 gaps on the South->North wave when there's really only two. There's a big wave in the middle, a gap on each side, and a wave covering the ends of the islands. It also show 2 gaps for the North->South wave, but the Eastern gap is VERY exaggerated. When the wave is coming North to South (big center gap), there is a very small sliver on the Eastern end of the island that someone can stand in (normally only the MT when using that Sarth Positioning).

Some DK was tanking Sarth right smack in the middle. Needless to say the Pug raid wiped. We told him to position Sarth in the back, but he said his guild tanks Sarth in the middle with drakes. Has any guild tanked Sarth right in the middle while leaving drakes up? Never heard that before, was wondering if its true (and there a reason why) or if he was just BS'ing.

If you are looking directly at sarth and he's looking directly at you, there's a part on the main island to the right of him that juts out a bit, I usually hold him right there so I have my back to the wall on the right and he's facing me. Standing there leaves an open gap for fire wall when it spawns on melee side, and I have a clear view of ranged side when I have to move sarth - pretty simple
