Today, just 10 minutes ago - I'm all new to wow btw - I asked a question in the general chat about pvp gear. More specifically 'how do I get gear? Do I have to run arenas?'.
It begins with 'Are you a ebayer? When you hit 80 you should have an idea of how PVP works.' and ends with 'Hey $%^& you moron you are just full of %^&*'. I should point out that I never said anything mean to anyone.
This was Darksorrow.

I was on a server on my lvl 15 alt when I asked something about the class I was playing it was a priest. I get back 4 answers 3 of which are them saying if you don't know get the *!@# off the server. the other one saying something helpfull. I Then called the 3 that said something negative mother #$%^ers and they got all mad. It ended up with them 3 geting called stupid by like half the guys in trade and I think one was kicked from his guild as I got a very nasty whisper saying something about being kicked.
Is it good to ask questions yes. Is it good to beg no. Is it ok to argue with someone? Only if you are right.

Why are people such jerks?
Because they can be... The anonymity of the internet tends to bring out people's true colors, and it makes them feel invincible and that nothing they do has any consequences. They can be acting out for a laundry list of reason, but who really cares? I suggest that you make judicious use of the /ignore feature when you run across one of these sociopaths and move on. Once you weed all these misfits out you will eventually find plenty of actual human beings to socialize with that you will get along with. It may be a somewhat difficult and time consuming process, but good people are indeed out there in the World of Warcraft... 8)

Should the people have been mean to you? No. Should you have quit the game just because people were rude to you? Also no. WoW can be a pretty lonely place, if you don't have friends or a guild to talk to. And yes, people are going to be mean to you, because it makes them feel big (or just because they can). The best you can do is ignore them (or /ignore them) and move on. Eventually you will find people who aren't jack asses.

This is the internet, there are nothing but pedobears, haters, and nerds here. If you get all sissy and are thinking about quitting after being chewed out by people in a general chat...maybe wow is a little too hardcore for you.

Just an aside here, if you see somebody swearing way to much, report them. They WILL get a temp ban for it, Blizzard seems to take swearing very seriously.
Also, as far as jerks go...get used to it. The internet is moron paradise, and everybody and their sister thinks they have something earth shattering to say. About 95% of the people on the internet are the lowest common denominator of the human race. The other 5%, if your lucky enough to find them, are pretty cool people.

Like it was said before, yeah, the internet brings out the inner jerk in many people. So here's my advice, never talk in general, trade, or any other public channels. You may get tempted to however it is a good way of getting someone to decide to pick on you. Normally when I'm playing, if I see someone on the general channel say something I find interesting, instead of talking on the channel he posted in I just /whisper that person instead. That way you bypass the chance someone will decide to pick on you for talking in the channel. Also if you do have questions or such then never ever ask in a public channel like general, cause that makes you even more of a target. Try to find a good guild and hopefully they will be a better crowd to talk to. Also you could just pick the total anti-social path and just refuse to talk to anyone on the game at all, and save all questions for forums like this. Anyway that's just my imput.
