Yes, a crossbow is, for practical purposes, a 1 shot hunting weapon. Most crossbows that are powerful enough to be a reliable hunting weapon require some type of cocking device, either a rope, or a crank. If you actually want to hunt "rifle style" with a crossbow, you need to be looking at about 150 lbs draw minimum.
(By rifle style, I mean at a range of 50 yds or more. Bow hunting is usually 50 yds or less, and requires much more in the way of camouflage and scent masking, and is usually done from a tree-stand or blind)
A very skilled crossbow hunter can reload in about 30-45 seconds, using a rope assist. However, accuracy requires you to get the bow-string centered, and the bolt properly seated. Failing to get these things right will either result in a badly off-aim shot, or worse.
By comparison, you can easily reload a single-shot rifle in a matter of just a few seconds, even less for highly skilled shooters. In fact, many snipers use a single shot, bolt action rifle because they tend to be much more accurate, and reliable, than a rifle with a magazine. They are expected to be able to reload and return to their target in 1-2 seconds.
If you really want to get into hunting, and want the most reliable, easiest to operate, and very inexpensive rifle, look into a lever action 30-30. Both Winchester and Marlin make great rifles of this type. I prefer, and hunt with, a Marlin, because I like the side eject instead of the Winchester top eject. They are easily accurate out to about 150 yds, and are very safe and easy to clean.
One thing you want to always keep in mind about hunting is you never want to injure an animal, or prolong suffering. That is another thing I like about the 30-30 caliber rifle, it has "knock-down" power. It will rarely shoot through a deer, instead, it will penetrate, and if the kill isn't instant, it will knock down, or stun them long enough for you to get a second shot off. Bow, Crossbow, or Muzzleloader hunting requires you to be very, very accurate with your shot to avoid injuring an animal.
Anyhow....good luck, and i hope you enjoy hunting. I have been hunting as long as I can remember, and it is a great sport. I hunt from the first of October through the first of January every year, with bow, rifle, and muzzleloader. Once you get started, it's a very consuming hobby.

A weekend sightseeing in Seattle, or MLG in Dallas - any thoughts?
MLG in 10 out of 9 cases.
Also, Elura; I was in Stockholm yesterday. Wtf, does it always rain?
It has been raining more these past two months than it has for as long as I have lived I think. Isn't the rest of the world in a drought? Come on stockholm, just share with them.
Also rude not hanging out with me!111
I would have but my schedule was kind of packed

I would think with the short draw back of a crossbow that it wouldn't to able to kill a deer. I know they'll gophers and @#$%, but I've never tried a deer. My dads normal bow he made is ~185 pound pull back, and has dropped many a deer. I would think you'd have to be pretty close and a pretty good shot with a crossbow to make sure the animals dies and not just suffer (unless you're killing rabbits or *!@# like that, then you just make to make sure you can hit it).
As for a rifle regarding load times, my 243 can hold up to ten bullets in its clip, and one in the chamber. Reload time is about 3 seconds (if I'm not a noob and jam it up by not pulling to bolt far enough back), but normally the reload time is moot because the target already dropped from my first shot!
(I love talking about this kinda stuff, hunting and guns are definitely two passions my dad instilled in me!)

I have an older model of
this
crossbow, but the specs and style are pretty much the same.
It is capable of taking deer out to about 100 yds, but I would probably only take a shot up to 75. Bow hunting has one additional issue that rifle hunting doesn't...slower travel speed of the bolt vs. bullet. The deer is going to hear the crossbow being fired, and they have amazingly fast reaction times. My crossbow has a bolt speed of about 400 feet per second, so I really want to keep my distance down to about 200 feet or less, otherwise the deer will have moved from the sound before the bolt arrives.
Your .243 is a great deer gun, in the right conditions. My son started hunting with a .243 because of the lighter recoil. That caliber is very fast, and very accurate at longer distance. Where I hunt here in Missouri, we have a ton of brush and trees, so a heavier, larger bullet is the better choice. Something like the .243 will deflect more if it hits a twig or brush, where the .30 caliber bullets will bust right through them. Its pretty rare here to get a shot of more than 100-125 yds because of the terrain, so the loss of long distance accuracy isn't a problem.

Well, cleaned up and went to go leave to discover I can't find my car keys. Where did I find them? Dangling in the ignition. Good thing my boyfriend has the hookup to unlock my car. Ffff, this past week and a half has been absolutely ^&*!ty.

Should we keep disusing guns/bow and hunting here to keep it busy here or should we go make a hunting thread?
Also hello.
I think a hunting thread is in order.

One of my older rifles had a 10 clip as well, but it jammed like none other. We tried cleaning it, but that didn't really help.
So we switched to a single shot, bolt action, and I love that gun. It's definitely fun to shoot and reload. I dunno why, but reloading a bolt action just feels badass.
