its kinda obvious he did not :P SCII is one of the finest RTS ever, and makes me even sadder that there wont be a warcraft 4 =(
Alas, I'm also part of the "No-D3" crowd. For double reasons.
A: Munny. And B: Too busy playing SWTOR.
I only have 90 days of gametime, so I wanna squeeze them as much as I can, till those 90 days are done I aint playing anything else.

Being a big fan of RTS strategy games, I took a particular interest in SCII. My personal favorite game is Rome: Total War. It's mixture of RTS and turn based stratgy, as well as immersive gameplay takes strategy gaming to a new level. A single game can take DAYS. You actually build an empire, learning the maps, and falling in love with your nation. You have to balance long term economics, balance religious influences, prepare troops months in advance for anticipating invasions etc.
Before Rome: Total War, my favorite RTS was Age of Empires. Age of Empires was a marvel for the time it was created in. You could build your map the way you wanted, and explore the map, putting up defenses and attacking certain points strategically for the win. I don't see that SCII built on that at all, and in fact made the game more reflex based and less strategy based. Beyond a few tried and true builds, SCII doesn't offer any variation, nor is the map vast enough to be made personal through exploration. The game feels more like a complicated version of Rock Paper Scizzors than it does an intense chess style strategy of warfare. I feel that this genre should be made MORE complex, not less.
There was one particular thing from SCII that I did like, and that was that some of the buildings could be pulled down flush with the ground, to be used as a wall that your troops could march over.
So, what do you think... have I played it, or is pretty obvious I haven't?

Hey, I never said I thought you hadn't - I was more thinking your history with Blizzard had made you reluctant to try the game, and/or eager to criticise it. If you don't like the game that's quite all right - to each their own. I will agree that Starcraft is less about personal customization, mostly because it's a million times harder to balance a game built around customization for competetive play - which is what Starcraft has turned into. And you're right, one of the most common complaints against SC2 is that it's much more about countering the units that counter units than actual strategy, but I think that's the evolution of gaming in general - OMGWTFBBQ LAZORS OR BAD GAME - not necessarily just Starcraft.
That said, I love the game.

my comment was more aimed at Azazel :P I automatically assumed you skipped SCII due to being from blizzard.
I gotta say, from the Total War franchise, Rome wasn't that good for me. My favorite total war game is Shogun 2: Total War, and specially its expansion. (Come on xD I'm an Über-fan of japanese culture)
SCII lacks the complexity found in more advanced strategy games, such as the Total War series, or specially the Civilization one (now that one can take weeks to finish a single match) but it has that extra "kick" that makes it so awesome.
For starters is the plot, Total War, and Civilization, focus entirely on the gameplay, and offer no plot at all, wereas StarCraft has one of the finest plots ever, one that thankfully hasn't been ruined by going MMO.
And for laters, there's the fact that the 3 races available are vastly different from each other.
Again, using Shogun 2: Total War here as an example, I played as 4 different clans and they felt pretty much identical. Other than having a slight difference on one specific unit, they are all the same buildings, same look, same everything. Of course my favorite clan was Hattori, but doesn't change the fact that when switching to Tokugawa, the only difference was that they get a boost in diplomacy, get better warrior-ninjas and metsukes.
That's it, other than these 3 minor stat boosts, they are 100% identical to my Hattori clan.
Now take a look at starcraft and tell me how many similarities are between the zerg, the protoss, and the terrans. Go ahead, I'll wait.
I'm not saying one game is superior and another is inferior, Total War is a FANTASTIC serie for its own reasons, much the same way as Starcraft is a fantastic serie for its own reasons too.
And far more engaging than Diablo, which consists of 90% hacking and slashing, slashing and hacking. The combat is pretty fun, fast paced, and thrilling, but the story was really weak, and the scenarios were (this is all from Diablo 2 BTW, I haven't played 3 yet) very monotonous and repetitive. Even if the layout changed every time you logged off, they remained the same visually.
playing Diablo 2 was mostly rightclick like a maniac and watch the hordes of hell crumble beneath my double 2handed axes. And while that is absolutely fun, its not really a priority for me. Thus I wont play D3 for now.
First I gotta finish my 90 days of SWTOR, and get a new PC (not necesarily in that order either)

Rome: Total War has a plot. It's called history, which is what makes it extra good for me, as I have always been interested in Ancient Rome. I can mix in my own fantasy elements into my knowledge of history. I become Julius Ceasar, and march my armies across Europe. Each member of my family has strengths and weaknesses. Each city has a history with me. I remember each time I took a city with my praetorian guards. I remember the units I lost, the generals that died, the siege equipment that I used. Every battlefield is a part of the plot. I don't need some cheesy story about alien bugs chasing my hero around. I've got history. History pwns.

ya but that's only good for gamers that aren't avid fans of history like I am.
I read history books frequently, and as such, I pretty much know the plot before-hand.
Is kinda like starting to watch the entire Star Wars saga, but after reading the novelization. What's the fun there? you already know what's gonna happen.
Its why I have somewhat of a disadvantage when playing games based on real history, since there's a 80% chance I already know what's gonna happen.
Did you know I was studying to be a historian while in college? I only switched to Economy mid-career because a lot of folks told me being a historian (at least on this country) is a dead career with extremely few job opportunities, and I'd be mostly be on a classroom teaching kids (Knowing the generation of punks we have as children I immidietly said NO NO, and made the transfer to economy)
So yeah, I'm an aficionado to strategy games based on historically accurate civilizations, but the plot is always a downer to me, because they have either none to speak of (Such as Civilization) or I already know it beforehand.
The one exception was Age of Empires 3, as that one was based on fictional history mixed with real-life events. And of course Empire Earth, since its campaigns were based on less known parts of history.
